Dave, ITA that it's one of a doggie's best traits. Jenny may be little, but there's nothing out there like the sound of a Doxie barking...scares the heck out of anyone coming near the house unannounced. Of course she's pretty well behaved generally, and all I have to do is say, "Jenny...they're not stealing our garbage (stealing our mail)...." and she's content to continue her disapproval by low growls. Which is hilarious in a little pup!
Would Gaius actually attack someone entering the house unannounced?

I don't think so. That breed is very subservient to humans. Extremely so, being a working dog. Aggression toward humans was bred (killed) out of them over thousands of generations. I've never seen him growl or bark at a human unless it's someone at the door. And that's a bark, not a growl, to alert us. Then again, he could surprise us if someone means us harm. As I said before, I can't imagine a bad guy putting it to the test.
