I...AM...BACK...!!! (and cross-eyed jet lagged!)

And shoot, just saw that I missed the meet today, not that I think I could be coherent by the end of the day. Is the Mar 11th still on?
Sunraven, here is what I can suggest about going to Europe:
1. If you want super-cheap tickets but direct from YYZ (Toronto), most charter fly into London. BUT the problem is if you are doing a connecting flight to Continental Europe, make sure it is from the same airport (Heathrow/ Gatwick usually does long haul, cheapie airlines fly out of smaller airports). These airports are not close by.
2. Check out Easy Jet - love them more than Ryanair. But there are also TONS of other intercontinental budget airlines.
3. If you want to travel in a path (North heading South or vice versa), do an open jaw ticket (eg. Fly into Rome, Fly out of Paris) - not necessarily more expensive than a round trip. Unfortunately in this case, your choice may be limited to Air Canada
. You can do Euro rail in between or rent a car, depending on what you want to do.
4. I would avoid packaged tours from here but would instead do local walking tours or local city tours (to get a good sweep over of the city, then do your own exploring further). Besides the local guide can take you to some of the local restaurants (best Italian food I have ever had EVER was a small mom+pop place with 6 tables - told to us by our walking tour guide).
5. Go in Sept, after Labour Day. Prices drop, many things are still open, you avoid the crazy tourists and the hot summers.
6. Based on my experience, your best approach to Europe would be to do 1 or 2 countries that you really want to see and do them well. So that next time you go, you don't need to return to that country. Besides Euro rail pass has smaller country packages (2 countries, vs. 10 countries etc) which makes it cheaper. How many days are you going for?
7. Other practical tips: take midweek flight (cheaper), overnight (so you save on 1 night accommodation) - same with train.
8. And if you want to save even more, check out this website: www.skyauction.com - an auction site for flights/ hotels etc. I have been using them for at least 10 years and it is very good and dependable - unfortunately US based i.e. fly out of US. Observe the price levels for a while first before you make your first bid. They always repeat the auctions (so flights to Rome will be available several cycles).
Fly out of JFK/ EWR (use airmiles or whatever to get there) or to make it even cheaper, take a Mega Bus to Buffalo airport, take JetBlue to JFK (their hub).
Since what you want to see is mostly Italy (Rome/ Venice/ Florence), I could also suggest looking into taking Air France (with a stopover in Paris) - that way you just take the train in Italy (buy 1 country Eurorail) - Rome to Florence is close but Venice is a little out of the way. Alternatively, take an overnight train from Rome/ Florence to Paris.
No, this is not my day job, just love traveling. When I lived in London, I flew over to continental Europe every other weekend (on Easy jet), went backpacking for 6 months in Europe for my honeymoon and again drove around Tuscany/ Umbria when 5 months preggo with my triplets (Italians LOVE pregnant woman, and pregnant woman LOVE Italian pasta + gellato).
That was a long post - email me with more questions....
ps. have you considered biking tours in Italy? LOVELY!!!

Haha!! You're a world of knowledge, thanks for all that information.
It's very helpful. A few things we've already decided on:
1. We're going in Sept, most likely second week.
2. We're not doing the tour package from here.
Starting to look into flights and stuff now.
Add me on twitter and I'll add you back! Just mention you are from SC!

Abusing of internal mail? OMG I cannot believe you guys.

Remember to put a sticker on it and stamp confidential
Its like a dream comes true to you, isnt it?
You need to find another job.
Do you think you can bring a laptop at work and load it that way?
Hubby's co worker actually offered that, he said he can set up a laptop and just leave it like that at work and run SBTV
Welcome home!

Screamy and I can go crazy
