I was asked that too.... twice in one week. Had never happened before (other than when I was ACTUALLY pregnant)... I seriously thought "Do they know something I don't know?!" lol and hasn't happened again since (this was about 6 months ago)

I would never dare ask someone if they are pregnant/when they are due/what they are having/etc unless it is VERY obvious that they are pregnant (like 9 months obvious!)

My favorite answer is no, I'm not pregnant and the only thing I'm expecting is an apology.
I never actually had someone ask me that question but I like to wear loose comfortable clothes and one top in particular does have a maternity vibe to it. Someone saw me in it and a few months later my husband heard rumors that we were having a baby.

The first time this happened to me, I had already given birth to my son. I was more embarrassed by the scene she made telling other people about her faux pas. The second time it happened, I was at the fair with my children about to go on a ride when the operator said "Ma'am, are you pregnant?" Apparently you couldn't ride if you were. The third time, a customer saw me after being away for 6 months and said "Oh, barefoot and pregnant!" The latest one, an old co-worker I ran into asked if I was expecting. My reply has always been "Nope, I'm just fat". The thing is, I'm not THAT big, I just carry weight on my tummy so I wear empire waist tops to try to hide it. Ha, like that's working.

I never cease to be amazed at the questions people ask or the comments they make without thinking. It's the old "engage brain before opening mouth" that seems to be lacking.

Ok, so recently I have worked really hard and lost 25 lbs. I do admit I have probably another 30 to lose, and I'm working on it.
If one more person asks me if I am pregnant, I am going to scream!
How rude! It makes me feel like I lost 25 lbs for nothing!
I would never ask ANYONE if they were pregnant! Looking for some good responses, other than, "Um, no, just fat..."

firstly congrats on your weight loss, you should be so very proud of what you have accomplished, don't dwell on the other pounds you need to loose. I call that the foot and mouth syndrome, we are a society where size 4's no longer exist (no offense), it is what it is and most of us could tend to loose a few pounds. Don't take offense if it's people you really don't spend alot of time with as they are not in your close circle of friends/family so they have no idea....however, I would never ask someone if they were pregnant because nowadays like I said most of us have a few pounds to loose and we all carry our weight differently.

so sorry you were asked this, HOWEVER, be proud on your weight lose to date....it's fantastic & you should be so proud of yourself!

I do not know what part of the country you live in, however I see plenty of size 2's - 4's - 6's - 8's where I am

while i agree that the majority of women in canada are at least a size 6 and up, i have 3 VERY close friends who are in between size zero-3. They are petite.. so yes small people do still exist in canada lol
I myself range from a 6-8 depending on the make of the clothing. Im content with my size and wouldnt want to be a size 4.

Goodness... the last time I was a size 6-8 was in grade 7!

I haven't had the "are you pregnant?" yet when I'm not, but in the first two months I was pregnant with my second, I was asked several times by different people, "So, are you going to be having a second child?" Maybe it was obvious? Faces can sometimes get a little puffy with pregnancy... I notice it on people long before any tummy shows.

I was asked about being pregnant when I was 15 and a size two. I couldn't believe it at the time. I was so embarrassed and it caused me a lot of grief. People sometimes suck, but people can only make you feel bad if you let them.

your first 25 lbs was probably the hardest. If you are going for 30 more and keep on the same track it will get better. One day you just wake up and you feel great and will see that it was all worth while. I don't however think that someone coming up to you to wish you well really meant to hurt you the way that they did. It is the foot in mouth syndrome. People can just be stupid . Plain and simple. You can't change other people just yourself. The best thing I think to do is just smile and let them know you are not pregnant but thanks for ruining your day. Keep your spirits up. Like the others said a pregnant woman is seen by most as beautiful and glowing. So there was a complement in there somewhere.

Congratulations on the weight loss! I haven't been asked if I'm pregnant, even when I was pregnant because it became very obvious very fast. I kept getting asked if I was overdue and was actually not due for 2 more months! lol. I just carry in the front so it looked big. The only time I looked small was when I sat next to a lady who was having twins.

I"m not sure about all this size business. I'm about a 2. I say "about" because at Old Navy I'm a 0, at Tommy Hilfiger I'm a 2, at Lulu Lemon I'm a 4. Still can't buy things at the Bay even if I wanted to because they are too big. So what does the label mean? Nothing. I'm just happy when I'm healthy.

Personally, I think it's rude to ask a woman if she is pregnant. If a woman IS pregnant and wants to share that info, great. But it is not up to anyone to ask that information, I don't think.

That being said, on the two occasions that I have actually been pregnant (LOL) I found out that I was pregnant because someone asked me and I took a pregnancy test after they asked. lol. There seems to be a glow women get on their faces that's indicative of pregnancy. So in my case, I didn't mind so much because, well, I probably wouldn't have clued in otherwise...or at least, not as soon.

That being said, when my youngest DD was about 3 she asked me if I had a baby in my tummy. Guess I had put on some weight and most of it landed in the centre of me. lol. *shrugs* It did make me feel embarrassed...and resolved to do something about it.

Congrats OP on the weight loss. I have to agree with Ninna's first two paragraphs.

To make you feel better. My mom asked a woman working at Sears in the baby dept. when she was expecting. I was 5 months pregnant. My mom was going to be a first time gramma at 55. The sales clerk was about her age. (Not that you can't be pregnant at this age, but many women are hitting menopause).

I wanted to stick my head in the sand I was soooo embarrassed. I told my mom, just because we are in the baby dept. does not mean everyone is pregnant. After that, we both agreed to NEVER ask anyone that question again.

First-time grandmas are sometimes worse than first time moms.

Keep up the great work, focus on how YOU feel and not how others make you feel (water on a duck baby!)
