Thread: Site Under DDoS Attack
-
Wed, Aug 29th, 2012, 11:44 AM #1
Hi everyone. The site has been under a DDoS attack for the last 16 hours or so, and this happened to the blog last week as well (and in March as well for the blog). We are back up for the time being but still being attacked. When the attack began it was on the order of 15 Gbit/sec inbound traffic. It has since subsided some...
Honestly, DDoS'ing a Canadian coupons/shopping deals website over and over? I don't really get it.
Sorry for the downtime but there isn't much else to do about it right now. For today, email notifications will not be going out. That should start again late tonight. This thread is currently associated with: N/A

Distributed denial of service attack
In computing, a denial-of-service attack (DoS attack) or distributed denial-of-service attack (DDoS attack) is an attempt to make a machine or network resource unavailable to its intended users. Although the means to carry out, motives for, and targets of a DoS attack may vary, it generally consists of the efforts of one or more people to temporarily or indefinitely interrupt or suspend services of a host connected to the Internet.
Perpetrators of DoS attacks typically target sites or services hosted on high-profile web servers such as banks, credit card payment gateways, and even root nameservers. The term is generally used relating to computer networks, but is not limited to this field; for example, it is also used in reference to CPU resource management.[1]
One common method of attack involves saturating the target machine with external communications requests, such that it cannot respond to legitimate traffic, or responds so slowly as to be rendered effectively unavailable. Such attacks usually lead to a server overload. In general terms, DoS attacks are implemented by either forcing the targeted computer(s) to reset, or consuming its resources so that it can no longer provide its intended service or obstructing the communication media between the intended users and the victim so that they can no longer communicate adequately.
Denial-of-service attacks are considered violations of the IAB's Internet proper use policy, and also violate the acceptable use policies of virtually all Internet service providers. They also commonly constitute violations of the laws of individual nations.Last edited by DaveP; Wed, Aug 29th, 2012 at 03:39 PM.

DDos attackers are complete idiots who think they're hackers - though highly annoying idiots. The software to do it is out there and they aren't doing anythng more than clicking a few links. Even the person who came up with and executed the very first DDos attack was caught. He was a genuine hacker though, a kid from Montreal, I believe, who took down some big worldwide sites a good decade ago. They are pretty easily traceable if a website wishes to make the effort, but most can't be bothered because they're like mosquitos. just put up with them and they'll fly off elsewhere. Of course, they don't attack big sites anymore because they'll be in for a world of hurt.
Well Anonymous does, but any single individual would be stupid to try.
