so been busy making some rules what do you all think of these. for my oldest. are they fair??

you must pick up after yourself
you must do at least 2-3 loads of laundry per week (your own)
you must do at least 3 loads of dishes per week
you must keep room clean at all times
you must cook one dinner a week
you must pick one extra chore per week and complete
you must apply to 5-10 jobs per week until you find a job
you must iron your own shirts
you must create a budget for the next 6 months.
-he will have a weekly calendar to keep track of his successes. im also trying to prepare him for being on his own in the next 1-2 years. and the biggest hurdle he is extremely shy.
do they sound to strict. not enough?? what do you all think.

I think these are great! It prepares him for being alone doing his own stuff!

LOL on me - For candini, I had googled a Happy Engagement message to post to her, now googleads are following me around with pics of engagement rings everywhere!

Mrs. S. - those depend on his age, and the situation. Is he out of school and looking for work? Is he working at all now?

My son is 20 and working full time.
He's in charge of the dishwasher - loading/unloading, putting on.
He does the cat litter and garbage.
Washes his own clothes, and sometimes ours and towels/linens, too. Folds and puts away, too. Hasn't mastered ironing yet...
He does a fair amount of grocery shopping.
Keeps his bedroom and his mancave in the basement relatively clean.
He vacuums the living room, mows the lawn, shovels snow.
If he has time, he'll do pretty much anything asked of him - either in the house or errands. He helps sometimes with food prep for meals; he's slowly learning to cook more things and likes to do it, but he works til suppertime, so that leaves only one day free for that.

I'm sure that's not all, but wow - it seems like a lot we are asking of him!
He's working until he has to go back to school for the next stint of apprenticeship training.

he's in school part time, so he's home by 1. but the goal for me is to teach him how to take care of himself and learn to be on his own over the next few months/to year. so over the next few months i'll gradually increase the responsiibilities he has. i dont' want to overwhelm him but slowly get him used to what most of adults are used to doing daily. :)

he's 18! yes those are fair ... very fair! and good for you you're teaching him to be self reliant too

Then those sound good! Our son has been doing stuff around the house since he was a kid, part and parcel for being in our family.

Interestingly, when he was in high school, talking with friends about chores around the house, he had some friends who had none at all - and be darned if he didn't come home and tell me how grateful - yes, grateful - he was that we had him doing these things, he realized how much responsibility it all had taught him, whereas his friends were just drowning in their me, me, me lives...
You have no idea how wonderful it was to hear that! :)

18! Very fair then! I thought maybe 16 lol

even our 5 yr old and 8 yr old have weekly chores if they want to earn their monthly allowance

they set/clear the table (1 each)
laundry in basket
toys put away
they help fold their own laundry (a few pieces each and we do the rest) and put it away
brush their teeth is on there bc they forget lol yuck

it's important to teach them these things!!

bub - we never tied allowance to chores. Allowance was just spending money.
Chores are for every family member to contribute to the running of the house.
I know many people don't see the difference, but to us it was an important distinction.

well yes they need to do their chores regardless... let's be honest lol.
but that's the system my parents used with me and it worked


i always tell them i want to prepare them for their future wives. to go into things ready and knowing how to do everything on their own!
my DH is amazing he does 1/2 of everything, cooking, cleaning, laundry, etc
my EX ... pfff lol ... he helped when it was an emergency bc people were coming over. then he'd get PO'd as to why the house hadn't already been sparkling clean - when we both worked full time and i had 2 kids to take care of.

i want them to be like my DH and he tells them look how i help your mom one day you will do the same for your wife and in the meantime you help contribute to a fair family where everyone pitches in

We had to help with chores from the time we could walk, I have memories of lifting my little sister up onto the countertop so she could help us put dishes away after dinner when she was still in diapers, once we were a little older (I would have been about 9 so my sisters 5 and 8) we had to do the dishes every day between us. On Saturdays, one of us dusted, one helped with the laundry and the other tidied our homework/playroom (we had to tidy our bedroom every night before bed)

So I think you are MORE than fair with those rules
