I sometimes am surprised when I hear through a family member that someone from an older generation is pleased that I talk with them. I guess it is that though we don't know each other well, I usually am able to figure out what may interest that person for a quick chat. I can't speak the native language well but I try and revert to English and we somehow have a chat.

It makes me realize that when I get to be that person's age, I'll probably be grateful that any store clerks give me some basic conversation.

When Natalka mentioned an interesting older neighbour on her street, it reminded me of a recent article online about older people. The interesting ones take an active interest in current events and activities while some who seem "dead" (sorry, that it how it was written) live in the past. A matter worth considering.

Another thing about having older neighbours who also know the street well-there are fewer known neighbours now, so being able to talk to someone who even knows you is a social touchstone/connection to the familiar. Swapping produce, stories, tips and some favours in shopping/yard work/housesitting etc. comes in handy-you become the person asked to check the mail/shovel driveway or help with yard work especially if one of the neighbours suddenly takes ill or has some emergency.

Wonderful story -- he must be so happy that his tomatoes were so appreciated. Thanks for sharing.

I am having a hard time imagining what 600lbs of tomatoes looks like when canned....
I've done a little bit of canning but usually only 4-6 jars at a time....
