Tomatoes freebies and the old man

I have buy some tomatoes at the u-pick farm to do all my tomatoes. But I always wait for september surprise with neighbor, friends and family to complete my goal.

So far I have an other neighbor that give me (I only need to pick them) 33 liter of fall's raspberry, he will have raspberry all fall long, this will stop with a big big frost. I got also many yellow zucchini, green soy pods, mature soy pod (for dry beans) and new this year, this neighbor offer me walnut. I have 1 1/2 loblaws green bin full of walnut right now and I go daily to pick them before the squirrel! And yup all this for free. Guess why I don't coupon in summer!

love free produce! Between a co-worker and my MIL I haven't bought tomatoes in over a month! (we use a lot of tomatoes) I think it's time to learn how to can them.

Awesome brag! And amazing canning job - after my kiddos are a bit bigger, I'd love to really get into canning and preserving.. There is nothing like the sight of a pantry full of multi-coloured jars!

last year I only do 500lbs and was short of tomato in end of april. I hope I will be able to go until begining of june with 600lbs and have fresh cherry tomato to eat early in june 2013

It's absolutely amazing to me that you do all this; it's fabulous!

Hope you don't mine me adding here some generosity which we received yesterday. My husband, who is an electrician, went over after work to help an elderly man from our church who needed help with a wiring problem. Well, my husband came home with grocery bags brimming with goodies from this old couple, who are living in the city but still have a big garden on their farm. There was a huge squash (which I still have to identify on google so I know what to do with it!), 1/2 grocery bag each of lovely cucumbers and tomatoes, onion, two quart jars of dill pickles, jar of jelly - and to top it off, a spice cake.

I am especially happy about the tomatoes - they have been too expensive here for me to be able to get more than a few at a time, but with these, I'll be able to make a pot of my son's favourite tomato sauce!

We were so very touched by them sharing their bounty with us!

Natalka, there is alot of people generous like that. Glad you received this from someone too.

I do my best to give to the next one and I'm always thanksful of what I get for free from people like this old man, my cousin or my neighbor. We didn't all have the same thing to give, for some this is knowledgement, physical help, time to listen. But we need to do more action like that.

As for the tomatoes, in season here, at u-pick farm they are between 0.26-0.33$ per pound. This is why I can that many in season. In winter I don't buy tomatoes in store.

Lol if you had said 70 year old man in Toronto I would've thought this brag was about my dad. He's given away tomatoes forever and every time I go visit I get bags full of them, and green beans, and squash, and eggplant! So full so I can share with my friends. He puts so much love into them and wants to share them with everyone. So nice a lovely old man let you share in his amazing bounty of delicious tomatoes!

That's the sweetest brag.
We have one neighbor who would share his produce with us every year. He was a great gardener but the last two years it's become too difficult for him and now it's my turn to share some of ours with him. We don't grow nearly as much but he and his wife are always happy to get the basket of veggies and I get some coffee, cake and chat with them a little. I think it's the chat more than anything they appreciate.
