IRVINE, Calif. - Animal activists want a California roadside memorial sign to honour fish killed during a container truck crash.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals volunteer Dina Kourda told Irvine's street maintenance chief the sign would remind drivers that fish value their lives and feel pain.
About 1,600 pounds of saltwater bass died on Oct. 11 when the truck hauling them to market got into a three-way crash.
Kourda's letter acknowledges roadside memorials traditionally honour humans, but she hopes an exception will be made.
Irvine spokesman Craig Reem says there won't be a fish memorial.
But PETA spokeswoman Asheley Byrne said they will go back and ask again.
It's not the first time PETA has asked to post a memorial for animals killed on their way to slaughter.
They've tried to honour pigs killed in Virginia and cows killed in crashes in Illinois, Kansas, and Manitoba, Canada, Byrne said, but none have been approved.
It's their first fish effort. They will continue trying for memorials when trucks carrying animals to slaughter are involved in crashes and there is a heavy death toll.
"They are on their way to slaughter, which is, of course, pretty hellish. To suffer an accident on the way and be left in the middle of the street is unthinkable," Byrne said.

Well...
I too happen to think that people act as though fish are nothing more than 'flushable pets' and don't actually give them the proper amount of space to live in, filtration, proper water parameters, or even proper care & feeding, but, the whole roadside memorial thing is seriously stretching it.
Maybe they could channel their energy into getting companies to stop advertising using pictures of goldfish on small aquariums since they don't belong in the darn things at all.

Funny enough we were at the pet show yesterday and DD mentioned how she missed having fish. I quickly reminded her of who took care of them and was not going through that again

I used to fish-sit for a friend when they went away (one year it was almost every weekend). Lots of happy community freshwater fish in a very large tank. None were particularly bright...except one molly. He (at least I think he was a he) quickly figured out that when I was in the house, food was coming. Cute little darling would swim to the corner closest to me & follow along the sides, keeping a close eye on me while I went about doing things (bringing in the mail, etc). As soon as the fish food was in my hands, he swam to the top, anticipating.
Unfortunately, a not-so-community minded fish ate him (jealousy?).
As for the original post, I'll support that the minute the PETA folks erect a monument to all the healthy adoptable puppies and kittens they killed and left in a mall dumpster.
