Christmas Music

Wow!! I can not believe all the arguing on facebook because of Christmas music. I personally love hearing it and SDM, CT and a few other stores and getting blasted on facebook for playing it already. SDM has suspended the Christmas music until further notice. People are saying that it is disrespectful to our veterans and that it should not be played until after Rememberance Day. How does it disrepect Veterans, I feel more grateful during the Holiday Season for all they have done so we can enjoy our lives. JMO

I love hearing Christmas music... the thing is, so many people don't respect Remembrance Day anymore. I wonder how many of the people who complain about it disrespecting the veterans, actually show their appreciation for what the vets have done.

OMG..it really makes me mad. All the haters need to get a life. So does that mean we can't play any music at all?? Whats the difference.....

Exactly...but playing xmas music doesn't meant that people aren't respecting Remembrance Day...Just because i choose to play a xmas CD tonight doesn't mean i have no respect for the veterans. Its ridiculous.

The only valid complain about Christmas music would be people who find it offensive for whatever personal or religious reason... not the time of year its played. That's just pathetic. The veterans have us the ability to live free and that means we can play any music we want at any time of the year.

The point about waiting till after Remembrance Day is a valid one, but keep in mind that there are many more reasons why the Christmas season might not evoke the same warm, happy feelings for some people that it does for others. For them, having the experience drawn out over a two month period can be very trying.

BRING ON THE X-MAS MUSIC! Obviously I need something to listen to while I wander up and down all the aisles of snow coverd this and snow covered that, Santa on here Santa on that, Reindeer stuff, and everything else.

Your right...i too get sick of hearing it constantly, and i love xmas....but for people to actually complain to the store and on Facebook, and say its because of remembrance day is just ridiculous and way out of control.

I have the same issue with decorating - many complexes and stratas here have bylaws that dictate no decorating until after Remembrance Day and I hear people complain all the time about not doing it before Remembrance Day. One has nothing to do with the other ... people just use Remembrance Day as an excuse that they don't want the season dragged out for 2 months. I love Christmas but respect that alot of people don't want to hear about it starting Nov. 1st. That being the case, just say so and stop using "Remembrance Day" as an excuse. Decorations and music in no way disrespect our veterans.

I personally LOVE Christmas, the music and the decorations. I've started decorating today and LOVE the Christmas music in stores. I support stores choosing a different soundtrack for Remembrance day itself, or shutting off music entirely for a moment of silence, but it is NOT disrespectful to veterans to enjoy the holiday music and decorations as soon as halloween is over.

After all, those vets fought for our right to freedom, the freedom to do what we want and say what we want and celebrate what we want. So if you really want to be respectful of vets, exercise your right to do all of that!

If people have a problem with it, then don't do it! Jeez, this is getting like the gay marriage debate, if you don't want to do something, don't! If you don't like hearing holiday music or putting up decorations or buying holiday gifts until after Nov. 11, DON'T. Don't drag everyone else down with you.

If there were bylaws saying when I could and could not decorate I'd probably be so livid I'd take it to court, it infringes my basic rights as a Canadian in so many ways. Rights those vets fought and died for.

With each generation, traditions and respect seem to diminish. It's sad and that's why so many people get upset. World wars were fought, lives were lost, countries were devastated, men came back changed and their families lives also changed. For the world "back here" to take the time to give these men their due by honoring them for ONE day out of the year, one day that is not overshadowed by anything else....well I think you can understand why people who remember those times might be upset by the lackadaisical attitude today. And to be honest, if my Grandpa hadn't fought in the war I probably wouldn't think twice about it either. :(

I totally understand your point..I have ALOT of respect for those who fought and continue to fight for our country. On Nov 11 i pay my respects, i honour the moment of silence, wear a poppy, watch the remembrance on tv and sit back and thank them, and throughout the year as well i remember and am thankful...listening to xmas music or any music for that matter or putting up decorations and being in great spirits has no barring on my level of respect.

my grandfather served too and i have absolutely ZERO issue with christmas music or decor before Remembrance Day.

for the amount of people who seem to take issue with this, that sure doesn't translate into the amount of people i see walking around wearing poppies...

I won't decorate till Dec 12 or so and I won't play music either till them. Hearing Xmas music over and over again makes me not in a Xmas mood. I love Xmas and I love the holidays but starting early just makes me realize how commercial it has gotten and its about gifts and spending money. Not about spending time with the ones with love and be thankful.

True. They had the Christmas cards out before Hallowe'en. I think some of those even played Christmas music.:P

Just to clarify my earlier post... I don't think Christmas music / decorations disrespects veterans. You can celebrate both IMO.

I absolutely HATE xmas music!! I used to work retail in the holiday season and having to listen to that claptrap over and over again just about did my head in. So there. But what does Xmas music have to do with vetarans, I have no clue. Some people will just about argue over anything these days. :neutral:

I work retail and I find I don't hear the music after a couple of weeks, so it doesn't really bother me.:shrug:

Personally I'd rather wait until the start of advent before shops burst into Christmas songs.

Mind you my local Dollarama has a nice display of Valentine's Day trinkets on the stands.

I LOVE Christmas music! I'm the person who is singing Christmas carols in June (but only to myself).

That being said, I usually dislike the music they play in stores. I like the classics. Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby. I'm not a fan of most pop/new versions of Christmas songs.

And I think the Rememberance Day argument is a bit of a flimsy one. For me, one has nothing to do with the other. My respect for veterans and all they have done does not waiver because I hear sleigh bells and see a Christmas tree. In fact, I'm often reminded of how the war stopped just for Christmas.
But I'm also one of the people that still stands at parades when the veterans walk by, because that is how I was raised.

I love Christmas, the music, everything, however I too am one who thinks there is no reason why stores can not wait 12 days until they start playing it. I think it is more respectful to the veterans to wait until after the 11th. What are the motives of the stores anyways? You know it's not for peace, goodwill and the joy of the season! It is to put people in the mood to spend spend spend for Christmas at their store. On a news website there were comments about this and one person suggested music from the war era played from the 1st to the 11th. I like that idea.

I love Christmas and I love Christmas music. But give me a break. I don't need to see decorations for over 2 months and I don't need to hear the music for that long either.

But what really irritates me is that somewhere, buried in tinsel and flashing lights and animated Santas, is a cross covered in poppies. It's very sad that a cross has to compete with a cheap commercialized display. Wait until November 12th. Display your cross from November 1 - 11. Let's not cheapen the reason for the poppies and show a little respect instead.

My friend owns a clothing store and she absolutely refuses to put anything in her window except remembrance day reminders. On November 12th, she does her "Christmas" window. I respect that.

At the risk of sounding like Scroogie-girl, I don't like listening to Christmas music either. I think that the Christmas season has changed over the years, it is now more focussed on conspicuous consumption than anything truly spiritual.

I do like Christmas but starting to play music and have all the displays in the store is just extending the corporate greed to push more crap on us than we really don't need. How about displays for how you can help others out at christmas instead of the blow up giant snowglobes, flashing santa sleighs and all the mass produced crap they everyone feels they should be buying. and buying and buying because it's being pushed at us for longer and longer each year.
Holiday/chrismas music is okay for a few weeks but not 8-10 weeks. There are a limited number of songs that they play over and over and over again, unlike other genre's that have millions of songs. Imagine playing gangam style 50 times a day, it's the same as hearing the same christmas/holiday song in every store you go in. It does not make me want to shop longer or spend more, it makes me want to shop online.
Maybe I am in a minority but shouldn't the holiday be about family and friends, doing things together, helping out those who need help (be it donating toys to the toy drive, food to the food drive or maybe helping an elderly neighbour clean and prepare for the holidays, whatever it may be.) Most people do not need any of the presents they receive at the holidays, how about instead of gift exchanges you go out as a group and help out someone who really needs help. (build a ramp for a neighbour having trouble with steps, or ???)
I love making home made ornaments for the tree with the kids, making gifts for family members and baking cookies. Holidays are not holidays when stores push the crap for extended periods of time. It's time to get back to what is really important and that's making time for family, friends, your community.

I would like to say that I respect everyones posts and there thoughts. I love listening to Christmas music mostly the oldies, not so much the pop stuff. I start Christmas early in my home but that's what we love. Everyone has there own way of celebrating and how long they like to do it, and I totally respect that.

I hope I don't offend anyone with this but I do prefer Merry Christmas to Happy Holidays.

Is it too early to start using bah humbug??? LOL! I mean Christmas is pretty and all but can't we have a bit of a break after Halloween...and I know as soon as Christmas is over they will be pushing the Valentine stuff out...Holidays are just so over commercialized that I don't even care about them anymore. However I am going to the Christmas tree ceremony on the 17th at the Eaton Centre...Not because it's the Christmas tree but because it's being hosted by Jeanne Beker :O So excited for that LOL!
