So it's now 6:30am, another day of being waken up by this stupid yapping dog. I was sure it was my new neighbours as the noise is loud and clear in my room which is right next to their house. When I went downstairs to look out the backyard window, I'm not really sure where it's coming from.

But anyways, can I file a noise complaint? Has anyone here filed a noise complaint like this before? It's not a large dog barking. Like I said, it's just 'yapping' so I figure it's a small puppy, but EVERY morning it begins at 6 and won't shut up until maybe 9 or 10am.

UPDATE: It's 6:36am and the dog has stopped for now. I'm still pissed because I have a long day at school (10am-6pm). I blame this damn dog if I get addicted to coffee again.

I'd talk to the owners first. They might not realize you can hear it, or if they leave for work they might not know it barks all day.

If you talk to them and nothing gets done, I think you probably could file some sort of complaint.

Honestly I would open the door/ window and yell at the dog to shut up I highly doubt the neighbors don't know the dog is barking and will probably hear you yelling snd might have the curtosy to take the dog back into their house.

I would also check your city website to see where you can file a complaint if you can't find a number call the NON emergency police line and file a complaint through them. You could also take a video of the dog barking with the dates and times to show evidence of this happening.

Oh, I DO know what that's like. We are in, like, year 15 of putting up with the dogs across the back alley from us. Usually barking around 11 p.m. to midnight - in the warm weather it's worse because people walk down the alleyway more, and it sets them off. There are three huge dogs.
It doesn't help to talk to the owners - they are old, and probably don't hear the dogs. They just kept reassuring us they were good dogs. And we asked if they could keep them in the house. Well, duh, no, then THEY would hear barking/whining!

We do have a city bylaw about dogs and barking - but it's really onerous, you must keep a log for a certain number of weeks, very detailed, then they decide whether to do anything about it or not.
So check if your town/city has a bylaw about dog barking.

I've looked into this with my own city. Keep a detailed record of when the dog is barking for how long. Contact you have made with the owners, or if you can't get a hold of the owners, a copy of the note or verbatim of phone message left.

Then you can contact your city by-laws office.

This is just an example of what they do in Halifax and the process. I imagine it would be similar in your area.

This is a nice log, which could be helpful for you to keep a record of the barking occurances:

Good luck. I live in an apartment building and this one tiny little five pound dog, makes the most noise. It's a case of him being lonely in the day. The super has talked to the owners and that helped a lot.

Thank you for the responses. I'll have to look into what my town thinks.

It's now 6:24 in the morning and the thing is still going. I was woken up at 6:09 by the stupid mutt again... I stuck my head out my window to see where it's coming from... It's coming from southwest of my house, which is where dozens of backyards are joined together. I still can't really tell which house it's coming from.

UPDATE: It's stopped again at 6:27.
