It's unfortunate for the person that dropped it, but since there is no way to know who the original owner of it is, it now becomes mine...
SO & I went to the grocery store this morning to pick up a few things, and in the parking lot I spotted a card on the ground & picked it up (we don't park close to try & avoid vehicle dings from others, so it was further back in the lot). It was a $25 Petro Canada GC, so I put it in my pocket.
Got home & checked the balance (the security code cover had not even been scratched off yet) & the card has not been used, so the $25 balance is intact.

Treat everyone with politeness, even those who are rude to you – not because they are nice, but because you are.

Right place. Right time. Congrats!
Silly question though, did you have to call to check the balance or could you do it on line?

You sure lucked out! Remember to pay it forward! Everyone loves moments like those!
I once lost 5 one hundred dollar bills that I got from the bank to pay my rent because I stopped at the gas station on the way home from the bank. A stranger found the money on the ground at the gas station and gave it to the gas station attendant and when I went looking for it, I got it back!

I would call Petro Canada and let them know because someone might have reported it as lost. If the gift card was purchased with a CC or debit card the original owner can be found. My gf works at Petro Canada call centre and she does it all the time but in french.

I checked at Petro, they said nothing can be done about a lost GC. The GC was issued Jan 2011 and went unused all this time; there is nothing to track it to any original purchaser and has become a finders keepers as far as they are concerned.

I know they can track down gift card but some customer service reps can't be bothered. They can see if its paid by CC or debit card but going through a program they have access to have. But if paid by cash they can't do much unless a Petro Canada Points card was use. They have a receipts program and another program to track it down. Or contact a Pre Paid Gift Card specialist like my gf

I can see what you're saying, but I've already called & asked about it, and it's not my problem that they "can't be bothered" to look into the GC, simply that they are not responsible for lost GCs. It's also not my problem that someone dropped the card after holding on to it for more than 10 months.
That being said, I'm not going to get into a war of words with you about the GC. If you happen to find one on the ground, and your gf can hunt down the original owner, then good for you. You can stop trying to make me out to be a horrible person simply because I found a GC on the ground.

It's too bad that they can't find the original owner, but at least someone can make use of it. Just make sure to pay it forward when you can.
