William and Kate Expecting a Little Royal

A disappointed Prince Harry will tonight fly out of the UK to Australia without seeing his new niece or nephew.
With the Duchess of Cambridge now overdue for the birth of her second child, the prince will not be able to meet the new royal baby until he returns to this country in mid May.
Harry, who will be bumped down to fifth in the line of succession by the new arrival, had returned briefly at the weekend to hand out prizes at the London Marathon after undertaking several engagements in Turkey to mark the centenary of the Gallipoli campaign.
He was dragging out his return until tonight in the hope of getting to meet the new little prince or princess.
But with Duchess now several days overdue, Harry is being forced to return to Australia where he is on a month-long placement with the army, followed by a week long official tour of New Zealand.

Thanks to recent changes in the law of succession, if the new baby is girl then their claim to the throne cannot be superseded by a younger brother, should William and Kate go on to have a third child.
She will also be known as HRH Princess (forename) of Cambridge after the Queen altered a century-old ruling in the run up to Prince George's birth which had meant that only the eldest son of a Prince of Wales (as well as the children of a monarch and the sons of those children) was entitled to the honour.
The new arrival will also bump Prince Andrew out of the 'top five' for the first time. He will drop to sixth in line to the throne.
His eldest daughter, Princess Beatrice, will find herself relegated to seventh – the advantage being that she will no longer require the Queen's approval for her marriage. Her younger sister, Princess Eugenie, will become eighth.
If the baby is a girl it will be the first Princess of Cambridge to be born for 182 years.

Kensington Palace delivers luxury pastries
to fans awaiting royal birth

LONDON -- The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge offered a sweet surprise to die-hard fans on Tuesday, sending luxury pastries to thank them for camping outside the hospital and awaiting the birth of the royal baby.
Prince William and the former Kate Middleton sent boxes with croissants, apple turnovers and cakes -- together with coffee --to the five fans waiting in tents outside St. Mary's Hospital in London, where the royal couple plan for their second child to be born, Kensington Palace said. Temperatures in London dipped overnight to 45 Fahrenheit (7 degrees Celsuis) and the fans like John Loughrey were cold.

The two boxes of pastries and croissants were wrapped in pink ribbon, leading those desperately awaiting the royal baby’s birth to speculate it could be a girl.

The baby weighs 8lbs 3oz.
The Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth.
The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news.

Royal Mail tribute

The Royal Mail has said it will commemorate the princess's birth with a special postmark on letters delivered on Tuesday, reading: "Congratulations TRH The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the birth of their daughter."


It is the first time in Royal Mail's 500-year history that a royal birth has been commemorated in this way.

Of course, the royal princess is not the only baby being born today. The Royal Mint has said it is to give 2,015 babies born today a lucky silver penny in keeping with the tradition.

The list of famous people the baby princess shares her birthday with is long and quite impressive. The list includes; ex-England footballer David Beckham, singers Lily Allen and Engelbert Humperdinck, fashion designer Donatella Versace, cricketer Brian Lara, Poirot star David Suchet, as well as horticulturist Alan Titchmarch, inventor Sir James Dyson and snooker star Jimmy White.
