"Pancake"/Shrove Tuesday 2013; Lent begins

I was just thinking, what about if I was to cook the bacon, then cut it into 1 inch pieces and just drop it into the batter. Then, you would be guaranteed to get some bacon in every bite!

ok, when I read this the first think that popped into my head....roll up the rim at Tim's!! It always corresponds with lent...this is the one promotion that gets me every year!

Db and I will be heading to our church for a Pancake Supper tonight. Yum! I LOVE pancakes. When I was a principal, I used to cook pancakes for the staff and when I was a teacher, we would cook pancakes - sometimes for the whole school!

I never realized that Tim's Roll-up the Rim corresponded to Lent - I was wondering why it was so early this year. Those sneaky guys - get you in for a coffee or tea and then tempt you to eat a donut!

We have a local tradition in SW Ontario called "Paczki" (Pronounced Poonchky). They are sugar dusted fruit filled doughnuts and people line up around the corner to buy them. The parking-lot at the bakery was PACKED this morning. (I happened to drop into a meeting where they were serving them today! - Blueberry - yum!)

avon, those are also known as Paczki (Polish) - and now that I've looked them up, I see they are also called pounchki, punchki.

Here, we call those bismarks. Others call them jelly doughnuts.

I've never had the real ethnic ones, though - from what I see in recipes, secret must be in using potatoes in the dough.

I didn't know about panake tuesday but we happened to have pancakes for supper last night.

Ash Wednesday



As Ukrainian Catholics, we don't have this tradition. However, when I was growing up, we went to Roman Catholic schools, so we would always have a Mass on Ash Wednesday and participate.

Well, since our cathedral is celebrating Easter this year only on the Julian calendar, I have a while til Lent begins...
It will start March 18; Easter Sunday will be May 5.

I don't like it when they are so far apart - Easter on the Gregorian calendar is March 31.
