for all of you who have loved ones with alzheimer's, one thing that i have learned from working in the care home, as hard as it is sometimes, is to still visit regularly, even if they don't recognize you at the time. even if they don't recognize you at the time, a lot of times they will ask about the visit after the loved one leaves, "was that my daughter, son, etc". a lot of our residents have a visitors book, where the visitor will write what they talked about with their loved one, how long they visited, what the weather was like etc. some of our residents will read the books on their own and will then talk to us on how their visit was, or we will do some one to one with the resident and will use the visitor's book to start a conversation with them. it will jog their memory, not always to the day in the book, but it will get them remembering other times, and it makes them happy. Also with kids, most of the loved ones, they love to see the kids. our local school and daycare visit regularly. It is such a good learning experience for the kids (be honest with them with what is happening). Not only does it make the day of the residents cuz it makes them feel more young at heart, but it teaches our children to be more accepting of people who are different or who are not like us.
I also take my son there on a regular basis. when i first started taking him, yes he was scared. he was scared of the wheelchairs, the Broda chairs, the different movements that they make (ie parkinson's), the noises, etc. but i explained everything in terms that he would understand for his age (ie they shake their hand because they can't make it stop. our brain that tells parts of our body when to work and when not to work is getting old and is forgetting to send the message from the brain to the hand). he now loves going to visit them! he walks in and makes himself at home and to see the smile on the faces of the residents is priceless! as scary as it is at first, it is so worth it in the end.

ITA Shaw. when my FIL was in the nursing home, we went about every 2-3 days if we could. you'd come around the corner to his room and he'd just sitting there, then when he saw us. his face would light up. we were the ones he recognized. when his siblings showed up, he didn't know who they were. i'll never forget my last moments with him. wont' go into detail but i'll never forget the experience.
anyway. went out this morning and found some more goodies. i have a couple of more places to go this weekend with hubby. THEN i should be done. haha. will see.Be Strong

Morning - it's a beautiful day here in NS, just waiting for the crap storm Walda to show up now. Going to be a crappy weekend weatherwise I guess. I hope I am able to get to SDM tomorrow!
Hijinx - where on the island is your mil? My mom worked in home care in the Duncan/Chemainus/ Ladysmith/Nanaimo area for 25 years. She may have some suggestions? If nothing else - Vancouver Island has no shortage of care homes!
I pray that she can be placed quickly and gets the care she needs.
My grama in in Casa Loma in Comox, she hates it - but then again she hates everything and everyone. I recently found out that she lied to us for years about my aunt and made her look like a total bee-otch, and of course I believed her, she is my Grama.... I spent the last 3 years not speaking to my aunt because of the lies that she told us, my aunt has been trying to reach out to me for ages and I finally figured I should 'try' for the sake of all things family. When I found out what had been going on I felt like total crap, so many things fell into place to make me realize I had been duped by grama. I am still confused somewhat and wonder who really is telling the truth but what do you do. Sometimes you have to suck it up and move on, life is too short. Being on the other side of the country doesn't help either, I haven't been home in 2 years. Anyways, that is my rant, I haven't really had anyone to tell this to, haven't even brought it up to hubby yet because I am sorting it out in my own head still.
I was hoping my box from Well would be here by now but appraently it wasn't even shipped til yesterday - kind of odd for them.
Jamie Oliver is making a pizza in a frying pan - it looks sooooooooooooo good. No weight loss here this week, might reweigh tomorrow as my body is all frigged up from backshift.Last edited by bluzsuz; Fri, Apr 12th, 2013 at 12:52 PM.

So yes I've been MIA this week battling an migraine. I get them quite regularly, but this week was pretty bad. I even had a trip to emerg for the good drugs! The IV drugs eventually work, but they also make me feel like I need to jump out of my own skin. They cause crazy anxiety, stress, and restfullness. It's so odd.
Anywho...my head is back to just a headache now. Hopefully on the mends.
Those in this thread that suffer from migraines, what works for you?
I try my best to catch them right away, and take a combination of ibuprofen and acetaminophen. It doesn't always work though.
Off to get caught up with questions.........SEARCH USING SWAGBUCKS!.....
