Hi, I applied to ODSP almost two years ago after my LTD had been cut off. It is currently on appeal and a tribunal hearing will be held in about 6 months. My current situation is that I am extremely broke, and quite honestly am thinking that my two children are better off with my ex-husband, who although abusive, can at least afford them. I have two children, one extremely young and the other just turned 18. I receive child support as long as they are in school full-time. My 18 year old will graduate this spring, then attend university. I have to apply for welfare, I am in debt up to my eye balls, and I do not have any money at all right now. My question is, should I let my 18 year old go live on his own, he would have to apply for welfare. What would happen to the child support I receive for him? I cannot bear the thought of this happening, but we are so very at our wits end. He does work part time. I really hope someone can help answer this. Thank you

I feel for you Scurvy, hard to know where you should turn when things are so tight.
Apply right away for OW - they are meant to fill in the gaps between regular income such as work or ODSP.

When you attend your appointment, the Caseworker you meet will get the details of your story and point you in the right direction. If you are eligible for OW now, they will get you approved. Your son likely will be required to attend your appointment as he is an adult and he is working. They will tell you how much you will receive as a family, and how it would change if your son were to move out on his own. Then you can decide what is the best choice for you!
Hopefully you have called since your original posting, so maybe things are looking up now?

I don't live in your world but can your 18 year old not get a job and contribute to the household and put his university ambitions on hold til his momma gets on her feet?

Scurvy, your best bet is to apply for CPP Disability, as you've already said your disability is considered long-term. That way, your children also receive some assistance. Keep in mind any money they receive is considered taxable income and they will have to report it on their income taxes. Hope this helps.
