compag with xp and lots of stuff that my techie friend uploaded so the putter works very well. It s 4 years old.I'm cheap I do have a nice big flat monitor!

LOL I know what you mean but we wanted a new puter and they ALL came with Vista.. at least all the ones we could afford did.

We still have the old puter with XP on it and I still LOVE XP.

I've also been known to use 'compy' instead of 'puter'... ilmk did a huge ROFLOMGLMFAO when she first heard me refer to a computer that way.

Hey Scooter, do you know if aMSN supports webcams yet? And if Ubuntu supports a Gateway webcam? Or Realtek Wireless?

I'm so tempted to dump Vista for Ubuntu but my girlfriend would kill me if I don't have the webcam working.

Webcams are a tricky deal. By a Gateway webcam I assume you mean one built in to your Gateway laptop. These have had spotty reliability from what I've researched under even Windows, so you might consider using a USB cam. Research before you buy however. What I'd recommend before that though, is just running the Ubuntu LiveCD right on the lappy and seeing if the drivers and kernel modules are already on the distro.

I believe aMSN does have cam support now, and so does Kopete.

As for your Realtek wireless, I assume again that you're referring to a Gateway lappy with an integrated wifi card. The best thing to do is search the Ubuntu forums for threads on these topics. I believe the Realtek cards use the Broadcomm modules/drivers in Linux.

As I said, just spin up the LiveCD and see how you fare. That's the best start.
