Thread: My Second one!

So, I've been actively seeking out and using coupons again for about two months and have amassed a pretty impressive stockpile!!
My husband has been very impressed not only with the savings, but the variety of products that I am able to buy with coupons for so much less. He commented a couple of weeks ago that he wished some of the familys of the residents that he works with would do something like this. I asked him what he meant, and he(my DH is a Resident Care Aid in a seniors facility) said that a lot of the families either live too far away, or just don't care that their family member doesn't have body wash, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant etc. They are forced to use the stuff that the health authority provides(and we all know how good that stuff is, yuck!!) A lot of the residents have dandruff, or dry skin, and the stuff they have to use is less than helpful to their conditions.(on top of everything else they have to deal with!!)
So when my hubby went off to work this evening, I handed him a Walmart reusable bag to take with him. When he looked inside, he almost wet himself! He said "you didn't go and spend a bunch of money on this did you??" and I was able to laugh at him and say but sweetie, it's all from my stockpile, and I spent less than 20.00 for the whole bag! I had found some Ivory body wash, fructis dandruff shampoo and conditioner, head and shoulders for the guys, and a bunch of deodorants for both men and women and thrown em in. I even had a couple of new bath poufs for some of the ladies!
He just came home from work, and the nurses and other care aides were so excited to see what he had, that when he told them how I got it, they said they would save all their coupons for me, so we could keep it up! Long story short, thanks so much with all your help with stacking and sales SC'ers! You all had a hand in making a seniors day a little better. They even set up a twonie jar so that my shopping trips could be partially funded. Made me feel great to help out people that can't do it for themselves, and put all those coupons to great use!
I can't wait for the coupons to start rolling in from the staff, so I can keep going. And just a thought, I know lots of you donate to shelters, but maybe the next time you have a bunch of shampoo and body wash, think about the seniors facilities in your donations. I know they appreciate it too!! Thanks.

That's great! I brought some shave cream to the hospital where I work, since it's a little hard to shave patients without it (especially with the horrendous razors we have to work with). My mom took some deoderant from my stash to bring to the nursing home she works at for the residents. It's sad that their own families don't bring them anything. Nice of your husband to notice and you to help out!

That's awesome! There's a seniors center close to where I live, that's a great idea!

That is fantastic, great job! Never thought to look into something like that, WTG!
You should post updates on your shopping trips for them.

Great job, I donate to an MS residence and it's an amazing feeling knowing that you help. Your bonus is that the staff is now helping you help them. To me it makes your story even more amazing. Thanks for sharing it

Wow wonderful, it is fantastic that the staff is on board with helping you to help others. It is sad that people spend their life raising kids, helping and contributing to their communities then are left without basic hygiene products.
My husband shared our coupon adventures with his co-workers and they turned up their nose. i wonder how many of them are neglecting their elderly family? ur story is heartwarming.

I know this is an old thread but.. It's such a great idea! Especially with the holidays not too far away. I remember visiting my great grandmother at her nursing home years ago, and we always brought special yummy soaps and powders and things for her, and we would chat with the other residents too- many that didn't have families that would come visit, let alone bring treats.
I haven't been back to the nursing home in years, but I've just sent an email to them asking if there is anything I can donate that would help them out!
Love the SC community, and all your great ideas!I love free books! Earn points at Swagbucks and get great Amazon GCs or Paypal $$.
