Has anyone figured out any pattern to the clearance markdowns? ie. a particular day of the week or does it truly seem to be random ?

They do presentations Monday Morning/ Tuesday Morning, so I assume sometime the soft lines/ presentation team members do mark downs. Every store is different though, but everytime I work I see a cart of clearance clothes for Soft line members to discount.

or Thursday before the flyer comes out every Friday.
otherwise they seem to be random.

Not every store is different. The team responsible for markdowns is the price accuracy team, who execute mark downs on a daily basis

Found lots of gift bags, tissue paper and some boxes on clearance. Pretty sure it was all 70% off.

Also found some Men's character underwear for $2.99 (wreck it Ralph, Kiss, Aerosmith) - $4.99 (Batman, Spider-Man, Cookie Monster, Coors, Molson, Smurfs, etc).

Also some car cleaning products were 50-70% off.

Ha too funny! In my location they hang on a display in Men's underwear section, it's about 3 feet long and about 5 feet high at the front of the men's sock and underwear section!

Found this on a local blog here in Edmonton. Not sure if it applies or not:

The Unofficial Markdown Schedule (US) Check with Your Local Store
Browsing through the internet, you’ll find much mention of this “unofficial Target markdown schedule”. Compare it to the clearance section at your local store and come to your own conclusions about whether the local store is following the schedule.

    • Monday: Baby items, children’s clothing, electronics, and office supplies/gift wrap/stationery
    • Tuesday: Home décor, women’s clothing, and domestic items
    • Wednesday: Food, health and beauty items, men’s clothing, toys, and garden items
    • Thursday: Lingerie, housewares, sporting goods, shoes, and luggage
    • Friday: Cosmetics, jewelry, hardware, automotive, and home improvement
