Bionic prosthetic for injured soldiers arrive to Ukraine



Today in Ukraine, during a press conference Ortoteh-Service GmbH announced bionic technology for upper limb prostheses for wounded soldiers.
“This is a second generation of bionic prosthesis technology. This is very complex technology. Our experts have carried out preparatory work for a long time including education, training, and regulatory certificates. Now we can not only produce, but also service the bionic prosthesis” said Stetsenko. According to him, the prosthesis manufactured using this technology has 14 ways of grasping, compared to those prostheses currently manufactured in Ukraine. “They can perform movements that require precision, such as using a door key, working a computer mouse, and holding fragile items.”

“Our goal is to better the lives of injured soldiers so that their life is returned to the best level possible given their injuries”- said the representative of Ukraine Aid Foundation Natalia Trembach. According to her, the manufacturing company RLS Steeper provided a large discount on these prosthesis. The balance was paid by donations from the Ukrainian diaspora in the UK.

Nemtsov's daughter to share her Solidarity Prize with Ukraine

Zhanna Nemtsova, the daughter of Russian opposition leader Boris Nemtsov, who was shot to death in February 2015, has announced that she would donate EUR 700,000, part of the sum she got as Poland's Lech Walesa Solidarity Prize, to charity projects in Ukraine

"Part of the prize in the amount of EUR 700,000 will be funneled into charity projects in the Eastern Partnership countries. This is stipulated in the conditions of the prize. All these charity projects will be financed in Ukraine, which is suffering from the stark war. The support will be given to the families of the Heavenly Hundred Heroes [the people killed during Euromaidan protest events in Ukraine in the fall and winter of 2013–2014]. In addition, it will be spent on repairs to schools and procurements of equipment in the Ukrainian regions that are hosting internally displaced persons [from the annexed Crimea and occupied Donbas in eastern Ukraine]. A Crimean Tatar TV channel in exile, which is now broadcasting from Kyiv, will also be given support. This is a stronghold of the freedom of speech and [the supplier of] objective news about the situation in the peninsula," she said in Warsaw on August 4 prior to the awarding ceremony.

The Lech Walesa Solidarity Prize is a Polish award for promotion and protection of democracy and civil liberties. It was established in 2014 by Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs Radosław Sikorski. The Solidarity Prize is the first global distinction for democracy and freedom awarded by a country which made its systemic transformation in a peaceful way. The Prize is awarded on the annual basis.

In total, the prize value amounts to EUR 1 million, including EUR 250,000 is the cash prize for the prizewinner; EUR 50,000 is allocated to financing of the prizewinner's participation in the award ceremony and study visit to Poland for the prizewinner or a group of persons selected by him/her. Around EUR 700,000 shall be allocated to finance development cooperation projects, indicated by the prizewinner.

Nemtsova said that the EUR 250,000, which has been allocated to her as the cash prize, would be channeled into the Boris Nemtsov Foundation.

Arrest for having Ukrainian flag in Crimea


Five police cars were deployed in Russian-occupied Crimea in an ‘operation’ on Aug 11 against two Ukrainians and a Ukrainian flag. Officers from Russia’s ‘Centre for Countering Extremism’ swooped on Veldar Shukurdzhiyev, an activist from the Ukrainian Cultural Centre and Iryna Kopylova, as they took photographs of themselves holding a Ukrainian flag near the monument to Lenin. The webpage Public Defence reports that Shukurdzhiyev and Kopylova were seized together with a lawyer from Moscow, Iryna Biryukova, although she had nothing to do with the photographs.


Administrative offence protocols were issued with the claim being that the two Ukrainians had been holding an unauthorized public event. This carries a fine of 10 -20 thousand roubles or community work for up to 40 hours.

This is not the first time that Ukrainian flags and even embroidered shirts have resulted in repressive measures against Ukrainians in Russian-occupied Crimea.

Shelling of Sartana heightens tension, fears of broader Russian attack

Shelling on Aug. 16 that killed two civilians and severely injured a 10-year-old girl in Sartana, a town on the northeastern outskirts of the city of Mariupol, has raised fears that attacks on civilians might presage a worsening of hostilities in the Donbas.


Despite evidence to the contrary in a town that the Ukrainian military controls, some still blamed Ukrainian soldiers for the attack.

More than 50 houses were damaged, with five suffering direct hits. The water, gas and electricity supply to the town has been cut.The 10-year-old girl was among six people injured in the attack. She is now in hospital in Mariupol, and may have to have her foot amputated due to severe shrapnel wounds.

Both sides have claimed that the other is preparing to launch an offensive, and that attacks on civilians are being carried out to justify a re-launch of full-scale hostilities.


(Yaroslav Chepurnoy, the military press officer for Sector M of the front line) Chepurnoy said that the attack on Sartana was one such case, and had been carried out by Russian-separatists with the aim of turning civilians on the Ukrainian side of the lines against the Ukrainian military.

“Those who conducted the shelling have achieved their ends," he said.

Attacks in Ukraine surge


Residents of Opytne evacuate from the front-line village by bus. The village was shelled five times on Aug. 16 by Grad rockets fired by Russian-separatist fighters, the Ukrainian military said on Aug. 17.

Two Ukrainian servicemen were killed and seven wounded in the past day from attacks by combined Russian-separatist forces, Ukraine's presidential spokesman on military affairs Andriy Lysenko said in an Aug. 17 noon briefing in Kyiv.


Two civilians in addition were reported killed in a Russian-separatist shelling attack on a town near Mariupol on Aug. 17, as tensions rose and fighting raged up and down the 450-kilometer front line of Ukraine’s Donbas conflict zone.

At its daily morning briefing, Ukraine’s military said the two died when shells hit houses in Sartana, a small town to the north east of the port city of Mariupol in southern Donetsk Oblast. Six civilians were wounded in that attack, including a child, the military said.

The town of Hranitne, further to the north of Mariupol, was also attacked by such artillery, the Ukrainian military said. According to the Minsk peace agreements this caliber of weapon was supposed to have been withdrawn from the front months ago, but there have been frequent reports of the use of large-caliber artillery by both sides in recent days.

Grad multiple-rocket launcher systems were fired near the city of Donetsk in a separatist attack on Troyitske, and there were five separate Grad attacks on nearby Opytne from 9 p.m. to midnight on Aug. 16. In other attacks on that evening, the Russian-separatist forces fired 122-millimeter mortars on Maryinka, Krasnohorivka, Pisky, and Pervomaiske – all towns to the west of the city of Donetsk where there has been almost daily fighting since a ceasefire was supposed to have come into effect in eastern Ukraine on Feb. 12.Russian-backed separatists also attacked the town of Avdiyivka to the north-west of Donetsk with 152-millimeter artillery and mortars, and then two salvos of Grad rockets, according to Ukraine’s military. There were unconfirmed reports on social media that the coke plant at Avdiyivka, which has previously been hit by shelling, was hit again on Aug. 16.


The level of attacks reported by the Ukrainian military in recent days is similar that seen at the worst stages of the conflict – in August last year, and in December and February this year –when Russian backed separatists made major gains against Ukrainian forces at Illovaisk and Debaltseve.
Moreover, the latest attacks come at a time of high tension in the Ukraine conflict, with both sides accusing the other of preparing to launch an offensive.

According to a report by UK newspaper the Independent on Sunday, Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council believes there are 33,400 Russian-backed separatist soldiers inside eastern Ukraine, with 400 main battle tanks and close to 2,000 armored troop carriers at “full combat readiness.” The council also said that there are more than 50,000 Russian troops on the border, and more than 9,000 already inside Ukraine.

Around 7,000 people have so far been killed in the war in Ukraine, making it the worst military conflict on European soil since the Balkans conflict in the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s.
