Hi there,
I'm planning to build an inlaw suite in my basement and am wondering if anyone knows anything about building code and furnace room dimensions? I heard that the walls have to be 3 feet from the furnace, any truth in this? Also, is it possible to have a bedroom beside the furnace room (separate accesses for both)?

You are going to be busy if you are doing the work yourself-submitting plans, getting permits and supplies; building, inspections.
Ontario's Building Code-main site:

Building Code 2012 overview:
http://www.mah.gov.on.ca/Page10300.aspx
The Code has an environmental focus, by putting in place measures that reduce greenhouse gases, protect air, water and soil quality, and conserve energy.
It features new standards for residential wastewater treatment, on-site sewage dispersal beds, as well as changes to technical, maintenance, and monitoring requirements for sewage systems.
The new Code is more consistent with the model national codes, for building and plumbing. Certain administrative and enforcement rules have also been updated.
The new Building Code will come into force on January 1, 2014, although some energy efficiency provisions come into effect on the first of January in 2015 and 2017, and certain changes related to on-site sewage systems will take effect on December 31, 2016.
