OCT 28 update: I'm having TOO MUCH FUN with this waffle maker! Even dd is putting in her orders! Well, since last week we've hosted some friends for desserts and I made ...you guessed it...fresh waffles! And thanks to all the chatter here in the thread it gave me the idea to try a dark chocolate orange flavour. So here's my play by play in pics:

These smelled sooooo good while baking up, I had to try one before the guests arrived! The flavour was amazing...the chocolate and warm waffle flavours hits you first, but then the subtle flavour of the zest really brings it all together and lingers on your taste buds. If you want a stronger orange flavour I'd suggest using some orange juice in place of water and/or the zest of 2 oranges.

They were a hit at the party, none left! We'll need a new batch soon...good thing I've got LOTS of chocolate! LOL!
I've also made Cinnamon waffles and will try out some new flavours in coming weeks. Will post pics of ones I make using recipes posted in this thread. Thanks everyone!

If you're following my "Quest to Lower my $OOP on Groceries" thread you'll have seen the savings we've achieved each month using coupons, loyalty programs et al.

To really stretch the savings, I'm finding better ways to use what we get AND still serve up good eats!

Eating breakfast one morning I realized that we go through waffles very fast.
Then I remembered that we got a waffle iron sometime back (actually, years back, from our wedding). Took a bit of searching; say hello to my new "tall, dark and handsome"!

This morning I grabbed my box of Simply Food Pancake/Waffle mix and cooked up 8 amazing waffles in minutes

And here's a set all dressed up

Now for the fun part, THE MATH:
1x box of Pancake Waffle Mix @ $2.99 plus tax
    oil and water - pennies

2 cups of mix gave me 8 waffles and I'm guesstimating approx 6 batches from a box - just over $3 for 48 waffles!

Compare that to 1x 16ct Waffles @ $3.02 (using $3.77 reg price at Walmart with $0.75 coupon)

A total savings of $6 every time I finish a box. Not a ton but every little bit helps. Double-wrapped in Cling Wrap and these babies are ready for the freezer!

Hope this brag not only makes you hungry but gets you thinking about new ways to save in your house- it might not necessarily be cooking-related, just other ways in general. The next "big" ticket to putting money back in your pocket could be hiding in your basement, craft stash, closet, or junk drawer.

Happy saving! I'm on break now...nom, nom, nom!

I will be right over for breakfast, looks yummy.,
You can do the same thing with pancakes too. So much cheaper than the ready made.
Friends don't let real friends pay full price.

It's even less expensive if you make your own batter, which is pretty easy! But then again, that does take more time, and time is money...

With fork in hand honey! I make pancakes more often and while they're a hit, waffles win out in our house. But sometimes you get in the "breakfast for dinner" mood and it's nice to have both on hand for a quick fix. Thanks!

You're right dizzyb and I don't mind doing the batter from scratch. The waffle iron came with a receipe and I intend to use it with many variations...I've looked up whole wheat waffle recipes too. Add a touch of 70% dark chocolate for some guilty pleasure and we're rocking.

Looks great! I have 4 kids under 6, and another due in jan, and then there's DH. My mother in law bought me a waffle maker for my birthday last year, and I sure have to put it to good use. I make my batter from scratch, whole wheat waffles to be exact. Kids and DH love those! If there is extra, I pop those in Ziploc baggies and when we want a quick snack, I just pop them in the toaster.
Thanks for reminding me that I gotta whip up a batch (or 2) soon!

Chocolate in waffles? I'm drooling! We have a waffle iron, too, but hardly ever use it. I think it will be resurrected tomorrow morning, with chocolate in hand!

nice! Ive been wanting a waffle iron but haven't been to actually get one yet but we go through a lot of waffles too. Everyone here loves them and the price of the preamde ones really add up! So thank you for the inspiration! I think i might just go start looking for one =)
