    Hi,

Questions to those who donate items to foods bank to obtain a receipt for their income tax.

How often do you go there? Do you need to make an appointment? And do they accept other things (household and hygiene/toilettries items beside foods)

Getting the receipt for income tax is just a way to push and motivate myself to work harder and brighten up my couponing skills.

    Thanks in advance.

I have been helping out a food bank in Oshawa with hygiene products. They hand out bags to their clients 4 times a year, Easter, July, Thanksgiving and Christmas. The bags include shampoo (2 in 1), deo, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste and razors. Im sure the food bank in your area would accept anything and everything.

I thought you can only get a receipt for taxes in the US, not in Canada. PlS correct me if I'm wrong.

I am not sure about everywhere in Canada... however... I get tax receipts from the food bank that I donate to which is in Kitchener, Ontario. And I know my friend does from the food bank in Cambridge, Ontario.

I have also gotten a receipt from one in Moncton NB. I think it depends on the food bank maybe, but I'm not sure.

I've had a bad experience with the Knights Table, Brampton.

last year I had hygiene products worth $400 collected over a period of one year. I went and donated and also asked for the tax receipt. The person said she was just a volunteer and will get someone from management to call me.
no call for weeks, I call in the 3rd week and this lady apparently tells me that you maybe a couponer but in order for her to give me tax receipt she would need all my receipts.
I told her these products are not bought over night it has taken me months. She was like I cannot help you am sorry.

Yes, organization can give tax deductible for gifts-in-kind. They have to be for the Fair Market Value (FMV). This has been for many years.

I donate to our Campus good bank as we have a large student family population, lots of little ones in families struggling to get by until degrees are finished and mom and/or dad parlays it into a job. They take anything a family could use and I've never thought of asking if they give a receipt - I buy things that are free or money-making and pass it on as I don't need lots of stuff but what goes around comes around and these kids are in school with my daughter!
