Yes, J&C, I've had it since I was a teen. It has changed over the years - I used to not be able to fall asleep for hours, but then I could sleep a decent number of hours.
Things changed in my 30s, I guess, I could fall asleep but then only get maybe four hours.
In my late 40s, it changed again - I have trouble both falling asleep, and staying asleep. Sometimes I may be in bed for three hours, but only sleep 3x30 minutes. However, the saving grace was being able to nap - I was never, ever able to do that before. Now I can catch up a bit and sleep a half hour to an hour during the day.
Of course it's wonderful when Milan comes over - of course he loves talking with us as much as we do him - we often get into deep conversations trying to solve the woes of the world, and always silly ones as well. He really misses the cats, and they miss him, so they are always all over him. At some point, usually the men end up doing feats of strength - at least wrassling on the couch, lol!
sweet sparrow - yes, I've lived in all types of places, with a/c and without. But it's been the way too many days/weeks of 30+ over the past two summers that we are just not used to here! But I'm just so very grateful for the relief that I now can get!
Good news - we got some rain, enough to wet the sidewalk, lol! Maybe more will come, fingers crossed!
Granger: you certainly don't look like you are about to have baby, you look fab.
Sweet sparrow, I loved the sandra bottom books. I think I can still recite most of them. We kept the barnyard dance for our oldest and the going to bed book for the youngest and someday I will give them to their children
Inquiring Minds Want to know!!!
How are you staying cool?
What things do you do to keep the house cool?
It's so hot here, I know it's much hotter in some parts but geez...my hot flashes and the temps are making me feel like a melting snowman.
I open the windows as certain parts of the house go into shade if it's not humid. We currently don't have the window ac unit in so I have 1 floor fan blowing in the living room/dinning room.
I close the windows in the am as the temps start to climb and close all the curtains etc.
I put up a curtain on the door that goes downstairs as it's a 3/4 glass and trying to keep the sun/heat out. Also put up curtains today in Logan's old room for the same reason and ran out of spare curtains so threw a towel over the 3/4 glass front door as the front of the house gets sun most of the day and with this blazing heat I don't care if it's look like hell as long as it reduces the heat coming in
FBM-if it is any consolation hamsters don't tend to live too long-at least at our house-we went through 3!
J and C-we do not have air conditioning so every morning I open all the doors and windows to cool off the house. The colder it gets the better-although I am in danger of being"voted off the island" by my DH and DD some mornings! Then I close the house up and shut all the blinds-majority face SW so let in lots of sun. By 5 or 6 p.m. there is usually a breeze and I open things up again. In the midafternoon if it gets too hot I run a fan in the living area and sometimes I turn on the furnace fan set to cool to draw up cool air from the basement for an hour or so-I think the furnace fan draws quite a bit of costly power though so I don't leave that one on too long.
We are lucky here though that usually it cools off a lot at night and we have low humidity. I remember growing up in Ontario and we had a large sunporch with a black roof at the back of the house. My Mum actually put a sprinkler up there and turned the hose on to cool it down somewhat-perhaps a bit expensive for the water but we didn't have AC which is also expensive to run.
Tomorrow Logan and I are going to pickup Chinese takeout for a late lunch, it will be a nice treat for the 2 of us and gives us some time to venture out alone. I have an item that I have promised to drop off while out as it's 2 blocks from the Chinese restaurant and $10 in my reno account. I'm going to call and see if I can drop off our screen that the squirrel ruined, I know I will have to leave it for a few days but atleast it will get fixed. Also going to take a chance as there is a house very near my planned drop off where people have salvaged a deck and still have tons leftover, I will knock on the door and if no one is home, I will leave a note asking if they are interested in getting rid or possibly selling at a low price, you just never know. It would be for our cottage (wrap around porch)
Aw, turns out my son couldn't come for supper and a visit - he ended up leaving work to go home at noon because his back hurt so badly. He thinks he slept wrongly last night, and after an afternoon of stretching and caring for it, he says it's better, but not great.
Asked if he wanted us to send over supper, he said no.
Gee, I want to be a Mama Bear and when he's hurting I feel like he's four and I want to make it all better; it hurts me to know he's hurting...
A few years ago one of my wild barn cat tried to steal a porkchop when my back was turned closing the door to the house BBqing in the winter. poor kittys tail caught on fire before she could get the chop and off she went yowling and sizzling through the snow. Id see her from a distance or when i was filling the food dish in the barn but she stopped coming to the house after that.
I also melted the siding once on the house because the fat on the pork chops caught on fire while i was digging through the fridge looking for bbqsauce.
I BBQed alone for years because i lived alone.
I'm so not frugal in this respect. BF came with a house and central air when I relocated 14.5 hours from home two years ago. We have a digital theromstat programed to 22 degrees during the day and 19.5 at night. If no ones home during the day its moved up to 26 degrees. This wont be for at least another 4 weeks now.
Before I moved up here my house was left alone during the day. When i was home in the evenings I would turn the AC on in the window and set up fans to blow it into whatever room i was in.
I ordered us supper and picked it up on the way home. a little splurge but he was going to attempt to cook tonight. We get the boys today but right now they are a the minion movie with their mom.
Our nieghbours have been wonderful since the accident. BF usuallys their lawn twice a week because he likes it...theyve been doing it for us instead...and one of them went out and hilled my taters. its nice to be surrounded by good people.
We will have to empty the fridge in the trailer - we lent it to BF's neice over the weekend and she asked if we'd like the left over ribs and tater salad from our big supper sunday night. Very nice she left it tidier than when she got it (understanding very much how badly we felt and there were intentions of making beds n sweeping it up for her)
Also on a happy note...someone we interviewed months ago was still interested and starts on monday.
I
Hope everyone enjoyed their weekend! :)
Got home late this afternoon. Brats were really hot at my Mom's (no A/C - humans didn't care, brats did), so now they're comfy & I'm under a blankie wearing flannel PJs (I love the heat, what can I say :P).
I've spent the last 3 days gorging on raspberries from bff's backyard (D has been sweet enough to pick them for me). Brought some home & took them over to my Monday night group, so we overindulged on freshly picked organic wild Ontario black raspberries and the nice cake I helped my Mom bake this morning (hey, I measured out the flour ;)).
Had a fun weekend away, tomorrow I'll get back to the usual cleaning/organizing/napping. And playing with brats, must never forget that. ;)
Brats have gone off to bed (too much food & fun this weekend). I'll be joining them soon.
Night all. :)
Whew! I think I'm caught up!
I'm amazed at how many of you don't have a/c. My dh HAS to have the house cool. He really suffers with the heat - even in the winter he wears shorts. Some of our most expensive heating bills are summertime bills. In winter, we turn off the heat and he will often open the window. Brrrr!
I did a botch up of a shop at Sobey's tonight and will have to return things tomorrow.
@jasperandchar Thanks :) I have been reading everyone's posts though lol. Summertime is always super busy for me :)
Good Morning All,
We also do not have AC although we did buy two portable units for the bedrooms a couple of years ago. As of right now they have not been hooked up and we have been able to get by with fans. If/When the time comes it only takes me about 5 minutes to put the unit in. So far we have been able to keep the house comfortable, we have black out curtains on our front windows but open at night to let the cool air in. I have also been really careful about what cooking we do, I have been using the BBQ, the Toaster Oven and Instant Pot which really helps to not have to turn on the stove. We also have a number of other kitchen gadgets we have received over the years we are going to pull out and start using instead of the stove.
