    Hi everyone.
This incident occured jn Port Hardy, North of vancouver island. I believe what Bryce Casavant did was absolutely right and he did a good thing not destroying two cubs. Please sign the petition for this man if you feel he is right.

"Conservation Officer Bryce Casavant has been suspended without pay pending a performance investigation after he refused to put down two bear cubs this weekend. These baby bears, a brother and sister, were orphaned after their mother had to be destroyed after she had, at least twice, broken into a freezer of salmon and deer meat inside a mobile home on Hardy Bay Road, "through no fault of the owner."
“Although it is unlikely the mother was in town due to the fire, it is hard to know,” said Casavant.
On July 5, Casavant and members of the Port Hardy Fire Department literally pulled out all stops to rescue the babies who had come back to the property and were up a tree calling for their mother.
“They (firefighters) had their high-angle rescue specialist scale the tree and rappel down on top of the bears to lower them to me. I then tranquilized them by hand,” said Casavant.
The babies were estimated to be about eight weeks and weigh 20 to 25 pounds, are healthy and still nursing.

Please sign this petition to show your support to have Bryce Casavant reinstated as conservation officer to the North Island."

strange why he was suspended? Was it because he disobeyed a direct KILL order?

Yes. Because he disobeyed. But we believe that we have to protect our wild life, not destroy it. And these cubs were already calling for their mother to help them, not that they were tryibg to hurt people.

there was a follow up to the story, he is on paid leave now it seems.

Thursday, July 9, 2015, 10:56 AM - Over 70,000 people, including English comedian and actor Ricky Gervais, have signed an online petition on Change.org to reinstate a B.C. wildlife officer who was suspended for refusing to euthanize two bear cubs in Port Hardy.
Bryce Casavant's pay has been reinstated, The Canadian Press reports, but his suspension is ongoing.
The officer attended a situation at a mobile home where the cubs' mother had to be destroyed after breaking into a freezer at least twice to steal meat. The cubs, believed to be around eight weeks old, were were up in a tree during the event, North Island Gazette reports.
After the cubs were captured, rather than euthanizing them, Casavant took them to a veterinary hospital in Port Hardy and they were later taken to the North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre.
The petition calling on B.C. Environment Minister Mary Polak to reinstate Casavant collected more than 35,000 names by early Wednesday. Ricky Gervais posted on Twitter, "Reinstate this honourable man."

‘Officer did the right thing,’ says local bear rehabilitation expert

Langley’s own bear rehabilitation expert Gail Martin, founder of Critter Care, commends the conservation officer who refused to kill two bear cubs in Port Hardy.
“The conservation officer did the right thing,” said Martin. “Finally someone stood up to the government and said no to what they knew wasn’t right.”
The B.C. conservation officer was suspended without pay for failing to euthanize a pair of five-month-old cubs in Port Hardy, at the north end of Vancouver Island.
Their mother had been killed after repeatedly breaking into a freezer containing meat and salmon.
The bears came looking for their mom and that’s when Bryce Casavant refused the order he was given to shoot and kill the cubs.
Instead, he brought them to North Island Wildlife Recovery Association, a rehabilitation facility that takes in cubs and releases them back into the wild when they are ready.
Critter Care Wildlife Rehabilitation Society has been taking in rescued and orphaned cubs for years and releasing them back into the wild.
They currently have six in their care and just released nine back to the wild in June.
Critter Care is holding its annual open houses this weekend from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. providing tours to see the various wild animals in their care. It’s the only time the centre opens to the public.
“Bear cubs absolutely can still go wild when they are that young and they are always released far away from human populations,” said Martin.
The public was outraged by the Ministry of Environment’s decision to suspend the officer without pay and so far more than 55,000 have signed a petition to reinstate him.
Even English celebrity Ricky Gervais weighed in on the controversy in a post on Twitter.
Langley MLA Mary Polak is minister of environment. She was calling the situation unfortunate but refused to comment on personnel matters.
As of Wednesday, Casavant was still suspended, but with pay.
His union is filing a grievance.
Martin said the problem is conservation officers who are out in the field and know best about the situation in front of them, aren’t allowed to make the decisions.
“Someone behind a desk in an office made that decision to have the cubs euthanized,” she said. “That’s where change needs to happen. We have to give conservation officers the right to make the decisions.
