Brazilian police say American swimmers may not have been robbed

Brazilian police said Thursday that swimmer Ryan Lochte and three U.S. teammates were not robbed after a night of partying, and the intoxicated athletes instead vandalized a gas station bathroom and were questioned by armed guards before they paid for the damage and left. The robbery that was or wasn't has become the biggest spectacle outside of the Olympic venues in Rio, casting a shadow over American Olympians amid an otherwise remarkable run at the Summer Games. The ordeal was also a blow to Brazilians, who for months endured scrutiny about whether the city could keep athletes and tourists safe given its long history of violence.
"No robbery was committed against these athletes. They were not victims of the crimes they claimed," Civil Police Chief Fernando Veloso said during a news conference.
The police account came in direct contrast to claims from Lochte's attorney earlier in the week. The attorney, Jeff Ostrow, had insisted the swimmer had nothing to gain by making the story up. He, as well as Lochte's father and agent, did not return phone calls seeking comment.
The swimmers could potentially face punishment — probation, suspension, a fine or expulsion — under USA Swimming's code of conduct. It was not clear if the swimmers would face criminal charges, though police said the athletes could be charged with destruction of property, falsely reporting a crime or both.
Two of the swimmers — Gunnar Bentz and Jack Conger — checked in to a flight out of Brazil late Thursday after a judge lifted the order seizing their passports and keeping them in the country. They had testified about the incident earlier in the day, and Brazilians chanted "liar" as they left the police building.

Jamaica’s Usain Bolt took gold for the third consecutive Olympics in 19.78.

France’s Christophe Lemaitre was third in 20.12 seconds.


De Grasse is the first Canadian to win two individual track medals in the same Olympics since 1932.

Armed robbers posing as police officers held a gun to the forehead of U.S. gold medalist swimmer Ryan Lochte in a taxi hold-up in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday, feeding concern over safety at the first Olympic Games in South America.
Lochte was returning to the Athletes' Village from a party hosted by the French Games delegation, with swimming team mates Gunnar Bentz, Jack Conger and Jimmy Feigen, when armed men carrying police badges pulled them over.
The men told the swimmers to drop to the ground and demanded their money and belongings, Lochte said. When he refused, one of the men cocked a pistol and placed it against the swimmer's head, and he then handed over his wallet.

They believe gold medalist Ryan Lochte and his teammates fabricated the story to cover-up the damage they did to a gas station after a night of partying.

First Olympian stripped of a medal

The first Olympian to have a medal win revoked due to a positive doping test, according to the Associated Press, is Kyrgyzstan weightlifter Izzat Artykov.

The International Olympic Committee stripped Artykov of his bronze medal in men’s weightlifting after he tested positive for strychnine, per Olympics Journalists’ Association president Steve Wilson.

Strychnine is a potent stimulant, perhaps better known for its ability as a highly poisonous substance capable of sending humans into convulsions, asphyxia and eventually death in doses of 30-100 milligrams.

IOC strips Russia of 2008 4x100 women's relay gold medal

The IOC has stripped Russia of a gold medal won in 2008 by its women’s 4×100 relay team after the samples of one team member, Yuliya Chermoshanskaya, tested positive for illegal drugs. Chermoshanskaya tested positive for two prohibited substances, stanozolol and dehydrochlormethyltestosterone.

At the Beijing Games, Belgium won silver and Nigeria won bronze, and they are in line to receive the higher-level medals.

I want them to face some kind of punishment for making this story up!! Whether it is a Police charge or some form of suspension from competing in the next Olympics, they should be accountable for tarnishing the host Country of these Olympics.
