Russia loses appeal on ban of Paralympic athletes
LAUSANNE, Switzerland — The Court of Arbitration for Sport has confirmed Russia’s ban from the Paralympic Games as punishment for a state-backed doping program.
CAS announced its urgent verdict Tuesday to dismiss the Russian Paralympic Committee’s appeal against exclusion from the Sept. 7-18 games in Rio de Janeiro. A hearing was held in Rio on Monday.
The court said its judges ruled that the International Paralympic Committee “did not violate any procedural rule” in banning the Russian team two weeks ago.
Also, the panel says the Russian appeal “did not file any evidence contradicting the facts on which the IPC decision was based.”

U.S. Soccer has announced that Hope Solo has been suspended from the USWNT for six months following the comments she made about Sweden’s performance in the quarterfinal match that saw the U.S. eliminated from the 2016 Olympics in the quarterfinals.
“The comments by Hope Solo after the match against Sweden during the 2016 Olympics were unacceptable and do not meet the standard of conduct we require from our National Team players,” said U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati in a statement on Wednesday evening. “Beyond the athletic arena, and beyond the results, the Olympics celebrate and represent the ideals of fair play and respect. We expect all of our representatives to honor those principles, with no exceptions. ”
The statement said that prior incidents were considered “as well as the private conversations we’ve had requiring her to conduct herself in a manner befitting a U.S. National Team member” when determining the length of the suspension. Solo was suspended in 30 days back in 2015 for a build-up of conduct issues. Even considering her prior conduct problems, the length of suspension is surprising for simply inflammatory comments, but U.S. Soccer made it clear in the statement that there is likely more to this than meets the eye.
US Soccer has also terminated Hope Solo's national team contract.

Rio police charge Lochte with false report of robbery
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Brazilian police have charged American swimmer Ryan Lochte with filing a false robbery report over an incident during the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
A police statement Thursday says Lochte will be informed in the United States so he can decide whether to introduce a defense in Brazil. The indictment will be sent to the International Olympic Committee's ethics commission.

Dancing with the Stars? I think not. Perhaps Dancing Behind Bars! You're so right, @walkonby : he insulted the people of Rio and Brazil is well within its rights to prosecute.
Hope Solo otoh....too much testosterone, me thinks. Wonder if she was legitimately drug tested...

With a flourish of red and white, flag-bearer David Eng led Canadian athletes into the opening ceremony of the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
"This is a moment I will cherish forever," Eng told The Canadian Press. "I'm feeling so blessed. It was an even greater feeling to have my wheelchair basketball teammates enter the stadium right behind me and to share this precious moment with them. I love them so much."

Lochte given 10 month suspension, which means he'll miss the 2017 World Championships.
Still having fun, Sweetie??

A Belarus official who carried a Russian flag into the opening ceremony of the Paralympic Games has been banned from the competition.
Andrei Fomochkin, has had his accreditation for Rio cancelled by the IPC.
IPC head of media Craig Spence - "We check all teams before they go out into the stadium at every single Games, so that flag was pretty well hidden on that person because all of the Belarus team was searched before they went out and the flag was somewhere on the person that we didn't notice."
(BUT, of course....)
"A hero has appeared amongst us," said Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for Russia's Foreign Ministry.
Fomochkin has received support from Belarus for his gesture.
"This was the right thing," Dmitri Mironchik, press secretary for Belarus's Foreign Ministry, told RIA Novosti. "If we need to answer for these gestures, then we will answer."

Ah. Good! Thanks, @Natalka , I'm glad he's gone!
They should have sanctioned the whole team! Don't tell me they didn't all conspire and know about it.
