Chronic pain often accompanies addiction. In my case the pain contributed to the addiction, although the Irish genes didn't help. On the other hand, pain sometimes comes from the addiction. Most addicts and alcoholics have these symptoms for one reason or another.
Watch the pills. They can cause their own problems. I had a battle with Oxycontin, which is terribly addicting and I advise everyone to stay away from it. Ironically, I am on morphine and have been for years. For me, morphine is great as it doesn't make you "high" if you have real pain. It just goes to the pain and makes it go away. (Always under a doctor's control, one who knows your problems.) The irony is that by treating my chronic pain with a serious narcotic, I no longer have any desire to use or drink. I never knew what life could be like without the constant nagging of a damaged spine until the last few years.
Of course everyone is different and you must find your own path. You will know when you are "ready" to quit and hopefully that is now. The worst part is that some of us, (the stubborn ones) have to lose everything before sanity sets in.
Good luck on your journey.
