my friend works at sdm. she is a cashier and was working one day on 20x wus $50. just before they were closing for the night, the supervisor came and re-printed some receipts that people bought over $50 and didn't use their optimum card. my friend asked what he was doiing and he said that he is not being a good supervisor and he was scanning the receipts again and using his optimum #. my friend was new to this job so she didn't say anything but she shared this with me as she didn't know what to do and she found this very weird that a supervisor is doing something like this...

There a good chance head office will catch on sooner or later, know someone who worked at a gas station doing this for petro points. Head office started to investigate after the card was ed as unusual purchase amounts. They no longer work there. I am sure SDm would deal with it right away but i am not one to rat others out. Live and let live is what i go by.

letting the company know that they have a dishonest employee is not the same as being a rat.

implying so is very unfair to ppl who are affected by others stealing their points.

i wonder if you would feel the same if someone was skimming a buck or two from the till each time someone paid by cash.

I would hope that this is what had happened, and that the cashier wasn't stealing your optimum points. Also, if he/she were using their own personal card, you would see their name pop-up on the screen, indicating that it was a "staff" purchase.

bringing it to the attention of the company should still be done. they will determine who's card number it is, and if it isn't the cashier's then that will be proven right away

whatever the reason, it should be looked into.

If the original purchaser came in at a later date to claim their points, that would be problematic for this manager. I realize that the 20X the purchase wouldn't be eligible, but maybe they'd still want the base points. Yeah, I don't think HO would look on this manager's actions favourably.

maybe he wasn't using his optimum card because the employers don't get points from 20x, just base points. but he must have another optimum card.

At most of the SDM's I go to you only have the same day to come back and get your optimum card scanned if you forgot it at home. This way people don't use trashed receipts to get extra points. Probably why the supervisor waited until the end of the night

I worked at Shoppers as a cashier for years, and can confirm the system is setup to f*lag this sort of stuff.

If a supervisor was reprinting receipts at the end of a shift and then crediting Optimum Points on transactions, it would automatically be f*lagged at Head Office, who would investigate. There is no way HO would not notice that transactions from one cash register were being credited with Optimum Points after the end of the day – even if every single transaction was credited to a different Optimum Card. Any transaction credited with Optimum Points after the purchase was already made gets f*lagged at Head Office – specifically to look for any signs of fraud. All Shoppers have security cameras on cashiers now, so it wouldn’t take a lot of work to see who was doing that.

I’ve worked in lots of retail stores (not just Shoppers), and have seen employees who steal from the company – and none of them just blurt out “I am stealing from the company, don’t tell on me” – especially not to a new employee. Every single employee I have ever seen caught for stealing was very careful to cover their tracks and keep everything a secret.

I mean way off - my account starts with a 7 and the account that got them starts with an 8!

It was only 50 points but I would like to know what happened....

It’s most likely this was a system glitch, and not an employee stealing. Though I want to be clear - I know you personally didn't accuse anyone of stealing when you asked this question! Optimum Cards are now swiped across the barcode reader on the checkout desk, specifically to avoid dishonest employees “switching” cards once it is out of the customers’ sight. It’s still technically possible – just very difficult - without the customer noticing.

What you saw was probably a Supervisor Card. They wear it on their wrists or on a chain around their necks. They use the card into the system to override a transaction or system policy cashiers don’t have the authority to do.

Cashiers are not allowed to keep their wallets or Optimum Cards on hand while at the cash register - not just at Shoppers, but at any retail store I've worked at. It’s just common sense – and no store, even the most poorly managed one, wouldn’t notice that.

    Thanks for all the feedback.

After reading all the reply posts I think I will leave this issue alone and not pursue it.

I normally check my points in the store as well but in this case I was from out of town and in a rush to an event.

I have a question if anyone can answer; a couple of times (honesltly, I think twice) I was 2nd in line when the person in front of me didn't have a points card and saw me standing there with mine and said, put it on hers. The first time, the cashier didn't have any problem with it and put his points on my card. The 2nd time, the cashier said, I can't do that. (He was only buying milk and bread, not anything huge) Is it allowed or not? The 2nd time around, the customer actually got ticked off that she wouldn't do it. I don't see an issue with it. There are lots of people out there without Optimum cards (though I have NO idea why, lol); if they want to give the points they would earn to someone else...why not?

*Thanks for sharing about your points. I'm sorry this happened, even if it was 50 points, they were still your points. I always check that my points went on but never check my card number. I will now!

Something similar happened at the store I work at, it wasn't the cashier's card that was scanned, we watched the video and the previous customer snuck her card across the scanner while the cashier was handing the bags to the lady's husband.

Oh and your card may only be used for your purchases...it's a purchase tracking device with points as a bonus. They want to see what a 26 year old married male buys, compared to a 48 year old unmarried female etc...
