It means SCs should have hunter eyes with wish to get wrong price (higher price not lower) and also should have courage to claim for ..which I don't think I can have ever...LOL. Good luck to brave SCs.

I used to work in retail but always forget about this. Thanks for the reminder! Those of us who don't happen to be "all-knowing" are very appreciative not to have to spend hours spelunking back into archives to dig up old threads we would have no way of knowing are there.

With coupons, taxes are generally to be applied on the BEFORE DISCOUNT amount. Eg. I bought a pack of Motrin for $4.17 and had a $5 off coupon, but I still had to pay the tax portion on $4.17, which is $0.54 in my province. The point the poster is making is that this tax should not be charged with SCOP (and it usually isn't).

I agree that it's great to hear the enthusiasm! There are still too many people who don't know about this! (I feel like an evangelist LOL--as soon as I'm done telling people about how awesome Jesus is, maybe I should mention the SCOP :D )

I got $10 off a huge box of diapers at Atlantic Superstore. They came through wrong at the cash, and I mentioned it. It took 20 minutes to fix it, but I got the price on the sign and $10 off. It was great.

Taxes are charged on the amount before manufacturer coupon. However, taxes are charged only on the amount after store discount/store coupon, etc.

10$ is considered as a discount offered by the store from the displayed price (the correct price) to express the store's commitment to accurate pricing and a token of appreciation of the customer's bringing to their attention the scanning error. According to Canada Tax Law, taxes will be charged on the total after store's (seller's) discount.

According to the Scanning Code of Practice, for example, in case if the correct price of a taxable product is 10$ (or less), the retailer must give the product to the customer for FREE, i.e. that no taxes are even payable by the customer because the total after 10$ discount is 0 (or less than 0 accordingly). Similarly, if the correct price is higher than 10$, only the difference between the correct price and 10$ discount was taxable!

From my own experience, stores almost never are willing to give you Free product or 10$ discount voluntarily even though they participate in SCOP and have big signage of that policy right behind the cashier/customer service. Most of the case you must fight for it, either by reminding them that Scop would apply or instruct them to deduct 10$ from the lower price (i.e. the displaye/advertised price which is deemed to be the correct price according to the Code), not from the wrong higher price.

If a price is rung wrong at the cash, it is highly recommended (from my own experience) that you continue paying for it first, keep the receipt as your proof, come back to the shelf to take the price tag by your own (never let the staff make a run to verify it for you since most of the time they would simply take it down silently and come back telling you that there is no wrong scanning price!!!), or find a flyer, then head to the Customer service to ask for SCOP and get your refund. With these steps, you have all necessary proofs for your SCOP and do not have to engage in unnecessary/non-sense argument at the check-out.

The only store where I was given a product Free automatically by SCOP without my having to mention it is an Extra Foods, yay!

Shoppers Drug Marts in my city (Fredericton, NB) practice SCOP. I have benefited many times there. Perhaps it is a store by store decision with Shoppers???

I agre that it is optional, some stores participate and some don't

But every SDM i've been to has signs posted at their registers that they participate in SCOP...

FYI, if an item has a 50% off sticker on it (at Loblaws for example) or a crossed off scan code with handwritten price on the item (sales bins at Food Basics for ex.), the item will scan at the full price and it is up to the cashier to adjust the price accordingly. You will NOT get a SCOP for this. I tried at both locations and was unsuccessful . Make sure you point it out to the cashier though as some do not see it.
