last week we took our 15 yr old cat in for a check-up/vaccine/blood tests.. today the vet called & said she was in kidney failure & her liver values were elevated.
I sure wasn't expecting to hear this...…
has anyone gone through this. I am still in shock,i don't know what her outcome will be. next step is to give the vet a urine sample to see if she has a bladder infection & try to make her more comfy.
for now she seems fine, eating & drinking lots, in fact shes overweight. she has really slowed down...but then again shes 15.

So sorry to hear this, hoping it was caught early so treatment can be successful.
Big to you, and please give your sweet furball scritches behind the ears from me!

Sending you hugs, Linda - for both you and your cat. We have had two cats in the last 8 years with kidney failure (one was diabetic as well). One was around 15 and the other (the diabetic kitty) was 12 or 13.
She sounds like she is still comfortable and the fact that she is still eating and drinking normally are positive signs. Cats can surprise us, and with love, attention, and responsible care, they can sometimes live months or years longer than expected, despite their illnesses. It is important to keep an eye on her and to be aware of how things (re: her health) are progressing over time. Her comfort level and ability to stay hydrated, in particular.
There are some good groups online (Facebook and websites) specifically related to feline renal failure where people can answer more detailed questions you might have and offer tips and support. That is so important. I don't know how I would have coped with our cats' illnesses if it hadn't been for the support and information shared by a knowledgeable, experienced, cat-loving friend of mine.Last edited by TrueNorthTreasures; Sat, Jun 29th, 2019 at 01:17 PM.

@Linda Evans very sad to read about the situation regarding your sweet kitty. Fifteen years is a good length of time, but of course I hope you get to enjoy her company for more years!! Hoping yor vet will recommend a treatment that can prolong her life. ((((hugs ))))

I'm so sorry to hear about your poor furbaby. Cats hide symptoms if many illnesses and it's so upsetting to find out they aren't well.

thanks for your replys.
baba has had a few "accidents" pee'ing on the floor etc.. i put another litter box on the main floor so she wont have to go up/down stairs. also noticed tonight the side of her face looks bloated..im assuming its b/c its late stage kidney failure.
we're just taking it day by day.
this will be the last pet I own, I don't want to be on this emotional rollercoaster.
wow...think i jinxed myself posting this....son noticed her face was swollen....today its worse, so we see the vet on tuesday. could be an absess? or symptom of kidney failure?.... i am stressed....

@Linda Evans oh just look at sweet Baba!! Even with her face swollen she looks very kissable. You must really be going through the emotional ringer with her and I can say now I know that feeling. lets hope those antibiotics clear up that abscess.
We were not as fortunate when our 14 1/2 yr old Shih Tzu Murphy was diagnosed with kidney failure in August....he left us fairly quickly despite all the medical intervention we could afford to spend on him.
(((hugs )))
