Need some advice from you guys. I've posted about my husband starting to get converted to couponing, but today he took lots of steps back.

    Two things happened:

    1. My husband throws out everything. Often without asking. Boxes with Pins or coupons, etc.

We never, ever get flyers and by some miracle we got the No Frills flyer for their dollar sale this week. There is no No Frills near us but at least we could use it to PM so I was pretty happy about it. I circled lots of stuff I wanted in black pen. He threw the flyer out, not even noticing that it was all scribbled up for a reason. Now what? Will stores let me PM with a .jpg on my Blackberry?

    2. I thought I was doing great with him until our shopping trip to Metro today. We went there specifically to buy Olymel chicken for him (he is the only one that eats them). He was happy to get 2 boxes from the shelf. The 50% Facebook coupon was one per transaction, so I told him to pay for one separately. He made a big stink about how we should just forget it because he was too embarassed to use a coupon. It didn't seem to compute that its better to buy 2 boxes at $4.49 rather than one for $8.99 when he gets a craving (twice a week sometimes). We spent a total of about $50 oop and saved $27 in coupons today and he was putting up a fight! He uses complex math at work every day, which is why this boggles my mind.

How do you guys make your partner supportive of couponing? My couponing is very mild compared to some of the brags I see here and I still have an uphill climb to deal with here. And how do you stop them from throwing stuff out? I just hope he won't throw me out too

I have been in your shoes and my husband is now converted. The best tip is to get a jar and put all your coupon savings money in it so he can actually see your savings add up. I remove all coupons and pins from packages when I am putting away groceries. Put your flyers in your coupon binder where he probably doesn't go and then they are safe and sound. Good luck on the using of coupons as sometimes it is just better to go shopping by yourself and make two trips into the store or do two separate transactions. Good luck.

Mine isn't concerned about the few dollars a week we save here and there with coupons. The only time my jar would look impressive is after an SDM redemption. If I added the hypothetical costs of what my purchases would be at other stores, they could be greatly inflated, and I don't think my OCD could handle that.

I wake up just before the stores open and shop while he's still in bed. I get to shop without listening to complaints about how long the lineup is and he wakes up all cheery from sleeping in. Win-win!

If he tosses all your boxes, go through the recycling the day before recycling day. It'll be like Christmas! Not so much if he throws everything in the garbage...

Mine is converted because of all the free stuff he is finally getting. I think the big moment for him though was the moment I used PMing to get him a new jersey for 30% off.

Overall, just give it time and he will start to see how all the savings, free items and other stuff will add up to benefit him as well.

Cut the coupons off the boxes as soon as you can, it's a good habit to get into anyway, so that you don't miss any.

As for the coupon usage...you can't change their way of thinking, especially if they are embarrassed about them. You can always go back another time and use the coupons by yourself. Remember, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink...

I never take my husband Couponing with me. I always spend more when I do!! He brags about my savings but will not use a coupon himself

Like others have said, cutting pins and coupons off boxes right away works well. Also, I have one drawer (extra dresser we have) and my binder , flyers and other coupon stuff lives in there. A Rubbermaid bin would work well for this too.

Is that not a sale price for Olymel? I thought the coupon was only good for regular price?
    Isn't she a cutie

Thanks everyone for your suggestions! A tip jar is a great idea. It would fill up fast :D. And I will start cutting out pins and stuff right away. Problem is I can't go grocery shopping much without him, although I would love it. We have two grocery stores around the corner, but one is tiny and has nothing we need, the other is expensive. Everything else is about 20 mins walk away which gets heavy with no car. I have to wait for him to come home from work with the car so we can get stuff.

It took my DH a long time to become fully converted to couponing. At first he was just as resistant as your DH saying that it was too much of a hassle to use coupons. It took my first big 'haul' to convince him, which was enough Purex Laundry Sheets to last us for a year, all for free. (He loves those darned sheets!)

Now he'll cut the coupons from the boxes for me, argues with cashiers like a pro, always saves the receipts (he used to ALWAYS throw them away) and even defends me against friends who say I'm wasting my time couponing.

The tip jar is a great idea!

Thank goodness mine is converted also. He now asks if there is anything l need on the box, and if l am visiting l coming home to many boxes on the counter which is okay to me. He evens looks for tear pads in stores. Don't give up on him. Start him off on the Canadian Tire promos when they have them and when he sees that there is $5 promos from there it might just get him to thinking that hey they have coupons for my stuff out there, only problem with this is now hubby wants coupons for snowmobile stuff lol. but he's a keeper

Yes, you must always intercept boxes...assume they will be thrown out lol...no matter how good the intention it may interfere with that other thing they are trying to remember at that moment in time
