Stroke recovery is a process, different for everyone...
My husband's stroke was in September of 2010, and he is still in the nursing home. He started out at the hospital, then to the rehab location of the hospital, then to the nursing home. He hadn't made enough progress to go into the "restore" program(short term home preparation program) at a nursing home, so just went ta nursing home as a regular resident.
Progress has been slow, and not even what you would call steady.
Yes I remember the choking on water days, and the gradual return to regular food. Of course, at the beginning of that he wasn't even aware of half the plate, since his field of vision was affected.
There were abdominal injections of blood thinners, where now there is just a low dosage aspirin.
He can pull himself to a sitting position with his good hand, whereas before a hoist was required, with 2 attendants.
There hasn't been much progress with the hand, and it took a few months before he was able to move his foot ahead while being trained with a walker. (The physio person would push the badfoot ahead for him and he could move the good one.)
There even had to be a gradual lengthening of time spent in a sitting position. There were lots of complaints going through this, but gradually he stopped accusing the nurses of trying to kill him.
There were vision changes, and I did take him to get examined and new glasses. But there are still problems with focusing.
Most of the time I can't understand what he is saying unless he makes a real effort to SPEAK UP.
Nursing homes are fine, I guess, especially for a social type of person who enjoys the dining room, and group activities. Of couse my husband is not one of those people.
I'm taking that as a sign that he is getting back to his old self.
I'm sure that he can continue to improve. At the nursing home, he spends his tie in the wheelchair, but he claims to be making enough progress to be able to use a walker for short distances, and has a goal of being able to use a cane(probably quad cane)
This whole situation is the main reason for the renovation (putting in a bathroom on the main floor, etc.)
He doesn't seem to be too particular about how the reno is carried out. Not much input, so I suggested that he probably would be happy with a bucket in a closet for a bathroom..
No one knows what is going on in someone else's head. But it did make me wonder when he said that he missed home cooking and would be willing to eat the tuna casserole that I used to make...
Progress will happen when you leat expect it !Last edited by bluewaterwitch; Wed, Jul 4th, 2012 at 04:28 AM.
