July Food Bank Challange

Very nice initiative Holly! I give alot to In From the Cold here in Calgary, and also drop off at Mustard Seed, but I will start to think of foodbank as well. I generally only buy one extra item during my shop and put it in the basket at RCSS, but I should be doing more!

I also want to thank all the SC'ers who will and have donated. Poverty is such a problem in many communities. I give all year round thru my church and a Christian drop in center. I see the faces of poverty and the faces light up when a gift of food is given. It is a very worthy cause and needs to be continued all year round. I will contribute in August and will post my list of donations. Good work everyone. God bless you all.

I donated these items to a donation box at Safeway:

Old El Paso Taco Kit
2 cans of tomato soup
1 can of chicken noodle soup
1 can of Alphaghetti

Even though things are really tight at my house financially at the present time. I can always pick up one item and put it in the donation box, this post is a good reminder that everyone should give back - it creates good Karma. If everyone did this there would be no hungry people. Thanks for reminding me about giving back Holly!! You rock!!

I donated chili, noddles, pasta sauce, bacon and more today! Can't remember all the items.

Holly I donated a box of misc things from my stockpile - including 2 pack of depends, 4 mustards, 12 cans of soup, 4 boxes of pasta, 6 - 4pk of Level 2000, 4 Dove Body Wash, 4 Toothbrushes, and a few other misc things - I also donated the $10 as they can buy $30 worth of things such as fresh produce with the money.

Thanks for this I am going to try to do this once a month

does anyone have a list of places I could call/check out? In addition to food items, I also have toothpaste, shampoo, etc that the box at my Food Basics doesn't take.

I gave our donation to our local Soup Kitchen. They offer 1 meal/day(supper) to ANYONE who needs it. They also (when school is in) offer a breakfast program. On top of this, they run a food bank.

So, this is what we donated:

3 x Choc Chip Oatmeal Boxes (single packs) (FPC's)
6 x Cans of Tuna (no coupon but good sale)
10 x Maple Leaf Canned Ham and Chicken (B2 Save $1 and they were on for .99)
2 x BIG Bottle of Sunny D (FPC's)
4 x Oasis Jucie Boxes (FPC's)

And, I asked if they would take cereal still sealed but not in the box and they said "absolutely".
6 x Special K (strawberry and almond vanilla)

It didn't cost much out of pocket. It felt AMAZING dropping it off. I think I will do this every month. I'm thinking I will make each month different and really watch sales:
August: School Type Snacks/Juice Boxes
September: Deodorant/Toothbrushes/Toothpaste
October: Pasta Sauce and Pasta
November: Shampoo/Conditioner/Soap/Razors
December: I want to find out if they accept toys to give out to children who might not have "santa" drop by...........

I didn't realize that the health & beauty items were needed too. I'm embarrassed that I thought everyone could afford toothpaste and soap. But, I know now and can help

I have to confess, that instead of donating to my food bank this month, I donated to my Uncle, who lives in Ontario in a care facility. He is mentally ill and needs the care, but he has to buy his own toiletries etc. Because of his illness, his children won't have contact with him. He is bi-polar and his conduct in the past has been very erratic. One of my cousins is a priest and won't have contact with him, and the other is also bi-polar. I was never there to witness his behaviour, only heard about it third hand, but I can say that from what I have heard, I don't blame them. However, my mother is still in contact with him, she is all he has left. When she told me that he only had $100 per month to spend on needs (outside of food and housing), I put together a giant box for him. Razors, blades, shampoo, conditioner, shave gel, toothpaste, got some free toothbrushes from my dentist (I never know what coupons to use for those!), Advil, cold remedies, etc. It still feels good to help those who can't help themselves.
