Hi amazing awesome shoppers,
I'm not too sure where to post this, but I've been reading a lot about SCOP on this website. It sounds real interesting. I used it once for bias tape. I'm wondering if there is a thread where people compile their SCOP finds. So say for example I'm heading to Wal-Mart, I could open up the thread to see if there is anything that anyone recently got that I could try to get.
Does this exist?
Thanks in advance! This thread is currently associated with: Shoppers Drug Mart, Walmart

I'm thinking it might not work because if it came up as the wrong price, they would change the price in their system as soon as they could...
So if you went back to get the same item for free, it would come up as the right price...

Not necessarily changing the price in the system right away as normal staff cannot access the database. (and changing price in system usually takes days, not the changing part, change takes seconds but the actual getting there part takes much longer) The normal and correct way for staff to handle SCOP is take away the sign/price tag on shelf immediately (before they even give out the first one FREE) so no other customer can point to the price and says "that is not what the sign says there" and get another one for FREE. Then they should make a note for that item (UPC, item description, scanned price and the price it should be) and inform the related dept. By far, in my area, RCSS has been excellent at doing that. Walmart, well, not so much, depending on the staffs and the branch, and yes, sometimes one is able to get the same item FREE on consecutive days. I've done that

Once I bought 4 different color of nail polishes at walmart on the shelf the price was on sale for $3 instead of 3.97 but it scanned the regular price (all have different upc) when I asked for a SCOP they allowed only for one and gave me the rest for the sale price when I complained that they were not identical they say they are all nail polishes for the same brand Was I right or them?

What is the Scanning Code of Practice?
By Kimberley Clancy - www..ca ( frugal shopper )
The Scanning Code of Practice is a voluntary code that nearly every major retailer in Canada adheres to. It promises the customer accurate price scanning at the register on all UPC scanned or Price Look Up (PLU) merchandise. If an item scans in at a price higher than the shelf price the customer gets it for free (or $10 off if the item is more than $10)
The scanning code is endorsed by The Competition Bureau of Canada was created from the collaborative efforts of the Retail Council of Canada, the Canadian Association of Chain Drug Stores, the Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers and the Canadian Council of Grocery Distributors.
At participating retailers you should see this sign on the entrance doors and at the till that reads:
Scanning Code of Practice If the scanned price of a non-price item is higher than the shelf price or any other displayed price, the customer is entitled to receive the first item free, up to a $10 maximum. If a Code of Practice problem cannot be resolved at the store level, please call 1-866-499-4599 to register your complaint.

No, Zeller’s does not participate in voluntary Scanning Code. Except for i Quebec where this code is the law and not voluntary

If the store will not apply the code, call 1-866-499-4599and register a complaint.

If you buy three identical items you are entitled to the first item free, the following items will be adjusted to the lower price.

You are entitled to the first item free per unique UPC, so if each item has a different UPC each item is free. You are entitled to one item free per unique UPC code.

i don't think it's possible to have a list of SCOP finds.. because a SCOP can vary store by store.. for example i might find an item and get a SCOP at my walmart in town.. BUT if i find the same item at a walmart 15 min away it will ring up correctly and i don't get the SCOP
though.. i'm sure people are more then happy to past experiences with SCOP and items they have gotten free (or $10 off) in the pastWhen life hands you Edward Cullen...throw him back and demand Eric Northman....

When I worked at Zellers only a manager could change the prices of items (and not every manager knew how to do it), and if I'm not mistaked I believe it took 24 hours to go through. Nothing EVER rang up the right price at Zellers, but fortunately for them they do not honor SCOP. If they did they'd have closed a lot sooner, cause they would have went bankrupt from all the free stuff they'd be giving away haha.

Is it just me, or would posting SCOP finds kind of devalue the spirit of this website (SmartCanucks) ?
I'm all for announcing the best deals, how to stack coupons, and even showing how combining deals one can get things for virtually free is a great thing. In fact, I'm one who takes the deals, coupons, etc to the max to get the best deal.
However, SCOP isn't a "deal" -- SCOP is designed to protect consumers and alert retailers of pricing errors. Exploiting the error on your own a few times in a row is one thing. (Although the SCOP rules state that you get ONE for free, or discounted, and any subsequent items are sold at the correct price) -- granted there's no excuse for a lazy retailer who doesnt at least correct the display tag on the shelf when alerted to the error.
But publically announcing the error on this website in an effort to publically exploit the "error" just seems to go against the spirit of what this site is all about. Maybe I'm wrong...Last edited by bhlombardy; Fri, Jan 18th, 2013 at 08:47 AM.
