I had the MBNA Optimum Mastercard for a few years which I used quite a bit. I never had any problems with MBNA and never kept a balance on the card. This week I went to use my new RBC card and it was declined. So I called RBC and they said I had a past due of $150. However I never received the statement. The CSR was extremely rude basically calling me a deadbeat.

I have had my Amex for more than 20 years and other cards along the way. I'm sure there were times when I have been some days late with a payment because of holidays or a family crisis but I have never had a credit card company decline my use of the card. The credit card company likely has lots of data on me that I am a reliable customer.

Further, since I didn't have a statement to even pay the dang thing, I went to an RBC branch that told me I couldn't pay it with my TD bankcard or a cheque...despite having being told this by the CSR.

We have a small mortgage with the Royal and I am really rethinking doing any business with them at all.

Sorry for my rant. I hope Shoppers takes note of how this has been handled....in my opinion very badly!

I absolutely refuse to do anything with RBC. They are always rude and never own up to their own mistakes.

I think I am canceling mine too. I have never been an RBC fan so it just feels wrong to have it.

@ louie11: I totally understand you wanting to switch bank. RBC's customer services sucks. I had house insurance with them in the past and have the 2 yearly payments charged automatically to my credit card. For the 5 years I was their customer, each year they increase the premium and I remain their loyal customer UNTIL this... I lost my CC one day and the replacement card issued has different card # for security reason...and with the payment only twice a year, plus I have multiple CC I had forgotten to notify them of my new card #. Out of the blue I received a letter saying I have to pay at the bank the amount due by such date otherwise they will cancel my policy. I phoned them right away explaining that I lost my CC and going to give them my new card #. The CS said can't take my credit card # because they had billed me 2x and both time were declined (duh). In the mean time I received another notice said I owe balance of so much and it will be charged to my credit card # on file. Mad as hell I came to their office to talk to an agent and they said it's their policy not to take new credit card # once there's a decline payment. So I just paid with my other credit card (which they said can't be done in the first place but I brought the 2nd notice with me that said they will charge my CC, as proof that I can pay by CC) and cancelled their policy. Such an idiotic policy I am surprise they have any customers left. In the mean time, my internet company just shoot me an email saying my card did not go through I phoned them right back, explained lost card the situation, gave new CC number. Done, No hassle.

I haven been using credit card for 20+ years, my credit score is excellent it's their loss.

I have had bad experiences in the past with Royal so when I hear they were taking over the Optimum cards I knew I was not getting one. Too many other places that have much better service.

I dislike RBC and have had issues with them in the past, but do you get mailed statements? My VISA bill from December just arrived on Friday - Canada Post could be to blame for a lost bill. With new credit laws, the companies are really cracking down on past dues so they don't end up writing off balances from credit counselling or bankruptcy.

My boss paid his cable service for a full year in late Oct when it came up for renewal. He got home recently to find it disconnected. They disconnect everyone who doesn't make a payment at least once every 60 days (despite him still having credit that would bring his normal package up to Nov 2013 unless he gets any pay per view etc). They sent someone out to turn it back on right away but didn't really apologize 'it's just policy, sir'

TD once froze my account for a 'larger than usual deposit'
The deposit was a certified cheque from an insurance payout so no hold or issues with it not cashing

    Banks suck

Yes I agree you can encounter a problem at any bank. As I get older though, I've stopped giving my business to companies that treat me badly. I've held credit cards for 25 years and never had a company embarrass me that way. It seems be their policy in combination with poor customer service. They're not doing me a favour by giving me the card.....I'm doing them a favour by having it.

I use my Can Tire master card at SDM, rather than deal with RBC to get Optimum points. If you don't carry a balance it's a pretty good option to maximize your bonuses at SDM. It's 3 cents on the dollar for every purchase and I find that there are more opportunities to earn SDM points other ways so it's a great way to earn CT points for 'boy' stuff and automotive stuff we need. J

Just thought I'd offer an alternative, because I refused to deal with RBC from the get go.
