Okay so theres a family of raccoons living in my roof. Theres a hole in the side of the roof and before fixing it we need them out. How should I do this? I don't want to hurt them or put anything that could harm my feral cat colony which likes to visit me at night on the roof. I was thinking of putting chilli powder near where they come in right before the sun sets. They're in there right now tho. I can tell because my ceiling moves when they move(ugh another thing to fix).

uh oh! They are really bad news ( racoons) they will destry everything, act fast with a professional ( I know the cost is awful) but they will return and do it again if the racoons return ( like a guarantee ).
Many neighbours around us have had them wreck the crawlspace area once they got inside. Hope you get other suggestions, I personally have not had them actually get in.

There was a thread here from last year and someone posted that using a strobe/disco light got the raccoons to leave the area under the roof. Might be the fix you can use until the repair job/trades are ready.

call a professional when dealing with raccoons. they are very protective of their young and best left to the pros...especially when they r inside your home. act fast as they will rip your attic apart and defaecate in your insulation

i'm laughing to myself right now because i'm picturing the neighbours' faces when they look at your house at night and all they see is flash flash flash coming from the hole in your roof
good luck with your problem, dh's uncle had a family living in his chimney once.. he had to call a professional to have them removed

That's really a funny and annoying situation. Cannot give advice, but hope you find the solution soon.

sorry to say but everyone suggesting getting in the professionals are right,
next door neighbours had them in their attic and had to involve that sort of logic.
we had one trying to come down the chimney one year, did what was suggested
then (long time ago) - play loud music, burn stuff in fireplace.
poor raccoon was only trying to get out of surprise snow storm, finally showed up on
the roof and took off - felt bad but it was getting close to being inside .
we had cordoned off a lot of the house - as if,,,
wishing you good luck ig

Please be careful, when cornered they can be very mean. Also they can cause a lot of damage to a building.
