Lego learning activities for preschool and lower elementary

Jell-O Play Dough

What you need:
· 1 cup flour
· 1 cup water
· 1/4 cup salt
· 2 tablespoons oil
· 1 tablespoon cream of tartar
· 1 pkg. (85g) Jell-O Jelly Powder


How-to:

· Mix all of the ingredients together in a small saucepan and cook over low on the stove. Keep mixing until most of the lumps are gone for about 5-7 min or until the dough starts to gather together into a ball and doesn’t stick to your fingers

· Place the dough on a floured cutting board and let it cool down for 20 min.

· Once cooled down let the little one knead the dough!

· Start again with another Jell-O flavor for a different color of dough!

Homemade face paint materials list (affiliate links provided)

• Lotion (any kind will work- scented is FUN)
  
• Corn Starch
  
• Food coloring or washable watercolors

Add the desired amount of lotion to small containers, one container for each color of paint you want to make. Then add a few drops of food coloring or washable watercolors to each container. Slowly add corn starch to the containers until you reach the desired consistency. Add more corn starch for a pastier paint and less for a more pliable paint texture.

Gluten & Corn Free Play Dough Recipe

You will need:

• 1 firmly packed cup brown rice flour
• 1 cup water
• 1/2 cup salt
• 1 Tablespoons oil
• 1 Tablespoons cream of tartar
• Food colouring as desired

To make:

1. Place all ingredients into a medium sized saucepan.
2. Stir continuously over a medium heat until the mixture congeals and forms a ball, approximately 3-5 minutes. Continue to turn the ball over on the heat for another 1-2 minutes.
3. Remove from the heat and turn dough out onto a board or bench top.
4. Allow to cool completely* and then knead until the dough is smooth. Sprinkle with a little rice flour as you knead if the dough feels at all sticky but be sure to only add a little at a time to prevent your dough drying out.

Hints & tips

• Although it can be difficult to wait, I find so often when cooking with alternative flours that you need to let the item cool before handling so the ingredients fully bind. Break your ball of dough into smaller pieces to speed up the cooling process.
• Liquid food colouring can be added to the pot or kneaded into the cooled dough. If kneading, only use a few drops or your dough may become very sticky. If this happens add a little more rice flour and knead.
• This dough is generally moister than other homemade play doughs and may stick to paper or a wooden tabletop. We work on a plastic place mat and have had no problems.
• Store play dough in an air tight container or wrapped tightly in a plastic bag.

This is one of the best ideas I've ever seen. The baby has something to lean up against, the toys can't get away and it could save countless children from drowning because the have something, besides the slick tub walls, to pull themselves up on in case the fall under the water.
