i wouldn't be surprised if there's massive amounts of trickery happening in different areas of the grocery store! millions of dollars are put into packaging and advertising, R&D/product placement. less quantity for higher prices

Being an ex-pat Brit..I always check front and back of my bacon habit packages, since most Canadian/US bacon tends towards the streaky/higher fat side for me. I prefer a less fat/bacon ratio and am prepared to sort throgh all the packages to get a good version.

However I remember working a British supermarket deli counter where ladies would ask for a desired amount of whatever sliced meat they were after and reject half of it for trivial reasons...until the store manager had a notice put up that all bespoke meat orders were final and rejection of the cut product would result in a sliding scale of banning but the goods still needed to be paid for.

All of the rejected products were put into the "bait tin" along with the other off-cuts and ends where you could buy 4oz/100g of sliced meat for next to nothing for your lunch time sandwiches.

It surprises me there is no "house name" brand of bacon that has become popular with a good ratio of lean meat with some fats. Bacon is naturally always high in fat and some brands are SHOCKINGLY 80% of white fat with small amounts of pink meat. I do really think bacon is a bit misleading. Read the back of the nutritional info too, 3 slices will already be 250+ calories.. have you seen how small they are too?

i turn the bacon package over and check. you can see if there is more fat than meat. i go through EACH package until i find the best one. i don't care what people think when i'm doing it. i also do this with pork chops, i always looks and search for the leanest one.

If only it were as simple as turning the package over and looking underneath. Just about all the bacon packages locally have cardboard labeling covering the whole back. The cardboard is folded over the front just enough to cover the front slice, leaving only a stack of edges on the front side revealed for viewing. Now, if you think that's innocent coincidence then good luck to you. Do people really think producers don't know what they are doing? If you were going to check bacon out before buying would you check it viewed edge on or would you look at the whole face. Well, it's the whole face that's covered up.

What brand of bacon are you buying? Schneider's, Hygrade, and Maple Leaf has windows on the back so you could see the amount of fat/meat ratio.

Thanks couponmummy. As a result of your comment I checked at the store again and was surprised to find that the flap at the front of various brands has now been reversed to cover the less interesting end of the package, or the rear of packages was either clear or had slits exposed to reveal the face of the slices. It seems my view of the matter was dated, that it used to be an issue but now the presentation has been corrected. So, an interesting discussion but, as it turns out, a somewhat invalid viewpoint on my part. On to the next cause (there are many).
