Error reading and more issues NEED Help

When I first came on here in Oct I had no problems computer wise. I could put in the smilies. Fancy up my posts using advanced. Now I cannot do any of that. I can not give rep at all. I cann't Bold any of my titles, or even insert paragraphs so all my posts are one big ramble.I just tried to do a paragraph her lets see if it worked. Anyway I know my computer is a piece of crap and I am getting a new one within the next month or so but wondering if there is something I should be doing in basic maintenance that could fix this. This actually happened when I first joined face book. I could not reply to anyone there, post pictures basically I was limited to reading everyone elses stuff. Then one day my daughter went on and it was all fine she says she did nothing to fix it so we never did figure out what happened.I am in the country so have dial up plus the hard drive I originally had got fried a few years ago and a friend put in a smaller one temporarily and never got around to changing. Could I possibly have too much stuff stored on it and that is what is affecting my performance. Please be gentle when explaining any possible problems I am soooooooo not a computer expert. I am mostly self-taught trial and error type person. Thanks and look for ward to any and all replies!!!!Also anyone know anything about high-speed and sattelite? I currently have sattelite through Bell Express vu and computer dial-up through Bell as well but don't believe you can get computer service through their sattelite? is it expensive to go through some one else?

bump again have tried running anti-spyware anti-virus, defrag, restart computer still having friggin done but with errors which means no advanced posting, no giving out rep and cannot insert paragraphs, bold on postings etc.. HELP PLEASE

Ugh ! I know what you mean, 2 months ago mine started acting weird then one morning I start it and it is displaying a striped background, so I figured OMG I'm too early, it's still in his jammies ! Then I restart it all over again and this time it was a blue background with info for a tech. Like you I am nearly self taught so I didn't dare try anything, well in fact it didn,t want me too either. So I call up Dell thinking they have a service shop somewhere but the guy says NO we don't and your computer's hardrive is fried.
So I called in a tech and he came over did a few tricks to it, but said : yep it's fried alright , he had to order one for me and left but not before handing me an 83.69 $ bill. A few days afterwards he calls up and says he's coming over to replace my hardrive , and since I didn't know what the ex did with all our CD's for windows etc... he had to take in to " the hospital " ( shop ) so that he could transfer all my stuff from one hardrive to the new one, and left me with a 271.48 $. But now it works fine and hopefully will last a long time as he is only giving me a 3 month warranty !!!

Did you try emptying all your temp files and cleaning out the history and cookies ? If you need to check if you have a virus, download Avast free for home use and believe me it is worth it as twice I was doing searches and got a pop-up from avast saying that the website had tried to download a trojan .

It sounds as if there may be numerous issues at work with your system.

Your first action should be to back up all your data - your pictures, documents, videos, etc. by copying them to an external hard drive or to disks.

If you create a new user on your system, are you able to view webpages correctly from that user?

Have you tried a different web browser, Firefox for example?

You might also try to do a System Restore, which reverts all your settings to the last known good configuration.

If your system has already been compromised by viruses, these last suggestions will not help.

But give this a try for starters:

1. Double-click My Computer, and then right-click the hard disk that you want to check.
2. Click Properties, and then click Tools.
3. Under Error-checking, click Check Now. A dialog box that shows the Check disk options is displayed,
4. Use the following procedure:

• To repair errors, locate bad sectors, and recover readable information, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box, and then click Start.

Note If one or more of the files on the hard disk are open (running), you will receive the following message:
The disk check could not be performed because the disk check utility needs exclusive access to some Windows
files on the disk. These files can be accessed by restarting Windows. Do you want to schedule the disk check to
occur the next time you restart the computer?
Click Yes to schedule the disk check, and then restart your computer to start the disk check.

If none of that works, usually when in doubt, the best bet is to erase your hard drive and do a fresh install of Windows.

Thanx have tried some of these things and it has improved slightly still get error on page reading. But I can give out rep.Yay!


Not sure about everything printing on one line am trying that out now.


I am getting a new computer would love to know what a good place to buy would be hmm I feel a new posting or search coming on....LOL Anyhoo will try the rest of this stuff over the w/e because my daughter wants this computer as a backup as she shares a lap top with roommate now and sometimes they both want on at same time. Plus I have to use this piece of you know what until my one comes to its forever home. Hee Hee! I'm in a silly mood excuse moi!!

By the way, what kind of computer do you have?

On your desktop, right-click on the My Computer icon and select Properties. Post everything it says there for starters EXCEPT your real name or computer name (just operating system, processor/CPU and memory). While many people just up and buy a new computer, I often find that sometimes this isn't necessary as many of the "old" or "crappy" computers out there still have a lot of capability, and the issue is often not the hardware but how the software has been configured.

By the way, if you are tempted to try my suggestion of reinstalling Windows, try this as a last resort. Remember that if you perform a repair install or full install of Windows, you will need the system disk that came with your computer as well, in order to install the drivers for your motherboard, graphics card, sound card, etc. If you don't have the disk, you will need to manually identify and locate each driver needed. So, reinstalling is the most work, and the recommended last resort.

Another thing to check is, go Start -> My Computer, right-click on Hard Disk C: and select Properties. Check that your drive is not full. You should have at least 3 gigs of free space on your drive for XP to function properly. If your drive is close to full, burn some of your files to CD or DVD and once copied, delete them from your hard drive.
