Don't fill them totally with soil. Outdoors, in my large planters, I put rocks, old bricks in the bottoms to just short of mid-way to take up space. It depends on how deep you root balls have to go, but you end up using a lot less soil. Also, those large sponges from dollar stores are good for taking up space and helping to retain moisture!

In my local Dollarama, I saw tropical soil mix bags. Shelf sign indicated 2 bags for $1.25. Not sure that product is all soil-check label.

i have a plant that has terra cotta pieces in the bottom quarter, then mulch, and then soil.
it is a tropical plant in a tall, clear glass vase so I can see how the 3 layers behave when the plant is watered. I find the mulch does a great job at keeping the soil from leeching down into the lower areas.
as for getting the soil cheap, I have used the Canadian Tire scratch cards a couple of times to get free soil.In 2020 I had 100 FREE Grocery pickups! Subscribe to PC Optimum Insiders & get 25,000 PC Optimum pts

I bought 10 bags of soil and 10 of manure when RCSS was clearing all there garden center stuff out last summer I think it was in July, bags were 99 cents - 1.49 for the big bags. Also if you have large pots to fill a tip I learned is to fill the bottom of the pot with styra-foam (I just save chunks from packaging) keeps the large pots lighter and costs less to fill with soil. I have also been known to use the CT scratch cards to purchase soil and seeds. I also compost but that goes into my garden not my pots.
