Russian Forces patrol around the International airport near the Crimean Capital of Semforopol
Russia has finally confirmed that it has moved troops into Ukraine's restive Crimea region, after speculation about Moscow's involvement
Russian troops have moved into Crimea in what Moscow is calling a mission to “protect Black Sea Fleet’s positions” but which the Ukrainian government has denounced as an “armed intervention.”
The Russian foreign ministry said Friday that it had informed the Ukrainian government that armoured units from the Black Sea Fleet base near Sevastopol had entered Crimea in order to protect fleet positions.

1 March 2014
Russia's President Vladimir Putin has asked his upper house of parliament to approve the use of Russian troops in Ukraine, the Kremlin says.
It follows discussions by both the lower and upper house to "stabilise" the situation in Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea.
Earlier, the Ukrainian defence minister said Moscow had already deployed some 6,000 extra troops to Crimea.
Kiev has accused Moscow of deliberately trying to provoke a confrontation.
President Putin submitted the request "in connection with the extraordinary situation in Ukraine and the threat to the lives of Russian citizens", the Kremlin said.
He asked for Russian armed forces to be used "until the normalisation of the political situation in that country".

clashes between pro- and anti-Russian protesters in the eastern city of Kharkiv
Ukraine says it has put its army on full combat alert after Russia's parliament approved the deployment of Russian troops to Ukraine.
Acting President Olexander Turchynov said he had also stepped up security at key sites, including nuclear plants.
Russia's Vladimir Putin requested extra troops to protect Russian interests in Ukraine. It came on a day of pro-Russia rallies in the country.
Russian soldiers are widely reported to be guarding a number of administrative buildings and military bases in Crimea. Parliament, airports, the state television building and telecommunications hubs have also been surrounded.
Some 6,000 extra Russian troops and 30 additional armoured vehicles are now in Crimea, Ukrainian Defence Minister Ihor Tenyukh said earlier on Saturday.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper is calling on Russian President Vladimir Putin to withdraw his military forces from Ukraine and "refrain from further provocative and dangerous actions."
Harper issued the statement Saturday, after meeting with some of his cabinet ministers and speaking with U.S. President Barack Obama.
"We join our allies in condemning in the strongest terms President Putin’s military intervention in Ukraine. These actions are a clear violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. They are also in violation of Russia’s obligations under international law," Harper said.
Meanwhile, Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs says Canadians should not travel to Crimea, a region in the southern part of Ukraine that’s currently the main flashpoint of the crisis. The department said Canadians presently in the region should consider leaving “while it is safe to do so.”
Harper also said on Saturday that Canada has suspended its preparations to attend June’s G8 Summit in Sochi, the Russian city that recently hosted the Olympics. Harper added that the Canadian ambassador in Moscow is being recalled for consultations.
"Canada supports the immediate deployment of international monitors from the United Nations and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe to Ukraine," Harper said. "We will continue to cooperate closely with our G-7 partners and other allies. Should President Putin continue on this course of action, it will lead to ongoing negative consequences for our bilateral relationship."
