We had DS' birthday this past Sunday... I invited his class of 9, but only 2 from class showed up. I gave them 2 weeks' to RSVP.

Luckily for me, the day of the RSVP cut-off, we had a school field trip, and I managed to talk to most of the parents' of his class... So, I knew who will be coming or not.

But I only knew because I approach them. One actually didn't receive the invite. Probably got lost in the cubby or something.

Good thing I invited our regular friends, who all had kids... So all in all, we had a great birthday celebration with 16 kids. It was a zoo, but DS had a blast. And it's all about having a blast, right?

I find it surprising that people do not RSVP. Even if a nay, a note to say "I won't be able to attend" is common courtesy, no?

I find that we have allowed "Busy" to be a catch-all reason for not doing stuff. Interestingly, a lot of us are not too busy to be on our phones, or watch TV...

This is in no way a flaming or blaming note to anyone. It is me sharing my thoughts, while contemplating on what has been written.

We had the party today, everyone had fun. It was indoor black light golfing. In the end there were nine including DS. One kid showed up without anyone telling us he was coming, but we were still under the minimum, so that was OK.

One parent contacted us a few days before to ask if two siblings could come too (one older, one younger). We asked DS, he agreed that that they could come, and they did come. But OMG, they were bad! They were 20 minutes late and we'd already started golfing in two groups, so the three of them made a third group, But they were back to the party room in no time, since they got ejected from the course for not listening, and the last straw, hitting the balls too hard and one ended up hitting the staffer looking after our group in the head with a golf ball. I guess I can see why they wanted a break from those three!

Overall though, everyone had fun, DS was very happy. Thanks everyone for your input!

I seriously would have called the parents and told them to come get their kids. That's just unacceptable.

I didn't know that bit until later. I probably won't invite that kid again, certainly not his siblings. I think the older one was the main problem.

Sometimes I think there is a "sweet spot" for invitation deliveries. Too far in advance the invite gets lost or pushed aside because "it's still a ways off" and too closed doesn't give enough time for them. I usually send them a week and half before the party, and then I have my child verbally remind the child and find out if they are coming....also I usually wait until they are at least in grade one for their first friend party to avoid any parent worrying that their child is too young still to attend.
