Help. Dying wildlife in the backyard. What to do?H

Hey SC friends.
We looked out the back window and saw a jackrabbit lying on it's side. Not moving much. Not doing well.
What to do?

What we already did was call someone from the Yellow Pages. He's $175.
We called regional animal control. After hours line took a message.

There's construction and stuff around so, the wildlife is being put out of their home. Your help is greatly appreciated.

I know that there are some SCs here that are good with wildlife, live in rural areas and know just what to do.Thx.

Maybe try calling some vets and explain - or if you have a college/university nearby, their vet program - there is probably someone there on the weekend.

We feel like wussess. But I am thinking he may have rabies or he may bite if cornered by an inexperienced person trying to capture him.

Update: he crawled under the neighbour's fence. . So we are not affected ~ for now.

That's what I thought of, since you don't know how/why it got hurt.

On a different jackrabbit note, my son is working as a mechanic and has an old car parked at his workplace (industrial area) that he's using for parts for his working car. The other day he went and lifted the hood of the old car, and was rather startled by a giant jackrabbit looking back at him! Milan just stepped back and the rabbit jumped out and took off.

Realizing this is an older thread, but last year I was in the backyard and one of the shrubs started to shake. I peeked and (sensitivity alert)


There was a baby rabbit lying there. It looked at me and shook all over. I called Animal Services (municipal) and when I went back to check, it suddenly screamed and died. It was a weekend, and AS called back in under five minutes and were going to prioritize the call, but since the poor bunny was gone they came by a couple of hours later to pick up the body. No charge, it's what they do. I keep the number by the main phone with the vet and emergency numbers now just in case an animal is hit by a car, attacked, or sick.
