Saturday, June 21, marks the first official day of summer in the Northern Hemisphere, when the sun reaches its northernmost point in the sky.
This year, the solstice occurs at 6:51 a.m. ET, the moment when the Earth's axis is tilted most toward the sun, ushering in the official arrival of summer.
The solstice — derived from the Latin words sol (sun) and sistere (stand still) — results from the 23.5-degree tilt in the Earth's axis as it orbits the sun.

The sun rises as thousands of revelers gathered at the ancient stone circle Stonehenge, near Salisbury, England, to celebrate the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, Saturday, June 21, 2014.
LONDON – Self-styled Druids, new-agers and thousands of revelers have watched the sun rise above the ancient stone circle at Stonehenge to mark the summer solstice – the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere.
English Heritage, which manages the monument, says some 36,000 sun-watchers gathered on the Salisbury Plain about 80 miles (130 kilometres) southwest of London on Saturday. Police say the event was peaceful with only 25 arrests, mainly for drug offences.
Couples kissed, dancers circled with hoops and revelers took part in a mass yoga practice as part of the free-form celebrations.
Stonehenge was built in three phases between 3000 B.C. and 1600 B.C. and its purpose is remains under study. An icon of Britain, it remains one of its most popular tourist attractions.

Not summery weather here, yet - although the sun did show itself yesterday after supper for a time...
Still very rainy - way more rain than usual for June, and it's not over yet.
Hopefully sunny days will come mid-week!

I hate summer *grumble grumble*

We've had a lot of rain the past week. Saved me the job of watering the garden. Around 16-20 C. It's suppose to be 27 C Friday and Saturday. I like summer but not the humidity or high heat.
