QotD: 30 Apr 2015: Your favourite teacher

My all time favorite teacher was in grade four, she was a nun....she was just an all round awesome teacher. My elementary art teacher was super, she taught us art, and how to do things, real art things, like making sock monkeys, and stained glass, and recycling before it was cool. My junior/ senior high English teacher was great, she was strict and cranky, but the way she taught us we remembered.

It was hard to pick just one favorite.

Can't pick just one, either - for varied reasons.

Grade 1 teacher Sr. Blanche - she was kind, funny, and smart - sad that I was only with her for half a year, as I got accelerated to Grade 2.

Grade 4 - Mrs. Schriml - SO interesting, we did lots of singing and first real introduction into geography and cultures of the world, had a great reading program which I loved - she really challenged me. (Many years later, when I was an adult, she moved across the street from my parents' home, so I got to see her as a real person, lol!)

Grade 7 - Mr. Sadlowski - Most smart and wonderful man (even though I did get the strap from him in Gr. 5 and 7), first introduction to anthropology, he was also a well-known artist and exposed us to new things in art - and encouraged those of us who were not even artistic.
As an adult, got to know him as a friend - and was fortunate to be able to teach in the school when he was still principal.

Grade 10 - Mrs. Dahlem - unleashed my creativity. I also babysat for her kids, so got to know her personally.

Grade 11 - Mr. Merkosky - fostered my love of English literature and grammar.

These stand out most, but there were many more!

Hard to choose, we had a lot of great teachers in high school (Grades 7-12) and I have a lot of great memories from then. Now if they have fond memories of us, that's a different story. Our class was definitely the prankster class at the time.

Mrs Neuls was the absolute best math teacher and curling coach. Mrs Highmoor taught history and biology and also took a group of us to Europe. Both of these ladies were so amazing.

Then there was Mr Piot, our scatterbrained Chem and Physics teacher (think Einstein hair). He must of had a really great sense of humor because he took all of our jokes/pranks in stride. There were a lot. We had a quiz one day and he left the room to photocopy the test, when he came back we had all hidden behind the counter at the front of the class. He was so confused because due to the location of the chem lab, we couldn't have gone anywhere without him seeing. He walked down the hallway scratching his head. We all sat back down again before he came back, and he looked so confused when we were all sitting there. He tried to scold us, but ended up having a good laugh about it. There was also one time when he lit his hair on fire during a chem lecture.

We also had Mr.Ferrer as a substitute (you may have seen him on the westjet commercials as the teacher mailing back letters to his previous students). He was long retired before we had him as a sub. He was absolutely hilarious, and when you got into trouble, he made you memorize shakespeare lines and preform them. Probably the most effective form of punishment for teenage guys.

In Grade 10 I had an amazing English teacher... he also was a pastor outside of school. I was having a rough time with family things, friends at school, and he was sure to offer guidance at any time.

I actually have more memories of bad teachers than good... perhaps I`ll save that for another time.

I remember a few good ones

High school English teacher: She taught Latin too but they scrapped Latin before I got there. Too bad since if you are doing any sciencey or health related schooling, having Latin makes it easier to learn the chemicals and body parts.

She dressed impeccably and wanted her class to be neat and clean. She knew her stuff and worked hard to help us. Shakespeare came alive and she made learning exciting. We memorized Shakespeare and I can still remember some scenes from King Lear and Macbeth.


High school business teacher: This man made doing income taxes a delight. We got monthly prizes for solving tax problems. We prepared taxes for fictitious families, seniors, single mothers, post secondary students. The prizes were cheesey but the competition was fierce.


High school math teacher: I can do calculus – even today. Lol. Because of this teacher. He had morning help sessions, lunch our sessions and in class prep sessions before every major test. He wanted our average for college/university to be as high as possible.


High school history teacher: Did you listen to Dust in the Wind (Kansas) during your high school history class? He made it into a slide show showing scenes through history including Egyptians and pyramids, Greek era, Roman era, World Wars etc.


High school sewing teacher: I remember her saying, the inside of the garment must be as neat as the outside. We learned to make pants with zippers (zippers can be hard), suit jacket & pants and a simple summer dress. If you made something nice and the inside sewing was a mess, you could get a change to fix it. She wouldn’t fail people and opened the class after school if you wanted to get some extra sewing time in.

BTW, none of my teachers went on strike. Strikes seem to be the norm today. Durham school board is on strike. Sad.
