So many battles being fought

It’s been billed as a concert to “bring memories back to life.”
Spirit of the West frontman John Mann, who is battling Alzheimer’s disease, will headline at the Horseshoe Tavern tonight for ‘The Spirit of John,’ a musical fundraiser dedicated to the Alzheimer Society. Mann was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s in 2014.
‘The Spirit of John’, now in its second year, is focused on bringing awareness to a cause that impacts men and women across Canada. It’s estimated that by 2031, 1.4 million Canadians will be living with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia.
According to Mann’s wife, Jill Daum, the impact of the disease has already been devastating on him.
“Really, the way that we cope is that we try to stay very much in the present,” she says.

This is where the healing power of melody may come into play. Daum says her husband still has the music in him.
“He may not be able to sit and have a conversation with you, but he can sing with you,” she says, adding that he still has that “beautiful voice” but now has to rely on an iPad to remember lyrics. “As he loses the ability to be able to communicate verbally, it’s really great for him to be able to communicate with music.”
There may be some science behind this. The Alzheimer’s Society says music stimulates the brain and helps bring memories back to life. This is why they’ve developed the Music Project, an effort to connect those living with the disease to reignite old memories through iPods filled with their favourite hits.
“What we try to do is try to load the iPod with the story and the soundtrack of their life, so music that was really important to them has an emotional meaning,” says Cathy Barrick, CEO of the Alzheimer Society of Toronto.
Barrick says in Toronto alone, thousands of iPods have been handed out to dementia and Alzheimer’s patients and the impact is noticeable.
“They start to tap their toes, they come out with comments that you think, ‘Wow, where did that come from?’”
Tonight marks Mann’s second performance at the Spirit of John. He will perform a set at the event with bandmates Tobin Frank and Matthew Harder.
Performances are also scheduled from Molly Johnson, Chris Tait and Jim Cuddy. Proceeds will go toward the Music Project.

Evening Q sters,
It's been an up & down day. Rodent called last night to say 1 of the furballs had let out a big bowl, then flopped on the floor & then got sick. Her breathing was really tagged & she couldn't move. After a bit, she seemed to be a bit better & could get up. Rodent took her to the vets this morning & the vet said, kitty either had a blood clot or a mini stroke. Vet gave kitty some meds to help with the disorientation told rodent the next 48 hours will be critical. Kitty meows every now & then, but she can't stand. I have her wrapped in a blanket, cuddling her. Not sure if she'll make thru the night, but we'll see
On a happier note, today it my parents 60th anniversary. Got them a Congrats certificate signed by Justin Trudeau & 1 signed by the Queen. Had them both framed so they can hang them on the wall.NASCAR SEASON is complete for 2021.
