Fifth Canadian medical mission to conduct surgeries on about 40 wounded this week
Kyiv, February 27, 2017. The fifth Canadian medical mission began its work in Kyiv. These are 26 foreign medical workers: civil surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses and a physical therapist. This time, 6 members of the US Army Medical Service Corps joined the Canadian mission for the first time. They all joined voluntarily.
“These people [Ukrainian military] give all their strength and risk their lives, so we do our best to support them,” said Khrystina Waler, Director of Humanitarian Initiatives, Canada-Ukraine Foundation, at a press briefing held at Ukraine Crisis Media Center. The fifth mission is carried out through donations from private donors. During February 24 – March 5, the mission will give consultations and perform surgeries at the Main Military Clinical Hospital. It will also conduct workshops for Ukrainian specialists.
“We have consulted over 80 patients over the past two days and will perform operations during this week. These will be operations reconstructing skull, face and hands,” said Dr. Oleh Antonyshyn, Head of the Adult Craniofacial Program at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and Professor of Plastic Surgery, University of Toronto. “We plan to operate on 40 patients this week. The final amount will be known only on the last day of operations, because the wounded, including civilians, who were injured in Maidan and in the east as a result of hostilities, turn to us every day,” said Col. Ihor Fedirko, Director of the Craniofacial Surgery and Dentistry Clinic at the Ministry of Defence Main Clinical Military Hospital. Cap. Andrey Sidorenko, US Army, noted that it is also useful for Canadian and US doctors to work with Ukrainian colleagues who gained a wealth of experience of complicated operations over recent years.
“All the necessary equipment will remain in the military hospital after the mission,” noted Oleksiy Barbezyuk, medical colonel, deputy director of the Military Medical Department of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine.

European Parliament deputies, diplomats, and civil society activists showed some support for Ukraine today in Brussels!
"We must constantly demonstrate support for Ukraine, to stress that we don't forget. We also support the reform process that has to reach the end goal. It's our investments, our faces, and hopes. Most importantly, we have to ensure that Ukraine is not alone, she is not left alone with the aggressor. That is the political message that we wanted to convey," said one of the organizers of the flashmob, head of the informal group European Friends of Ukraine, Petras Aushtrevichus

Serhiy Mokrenko, call name “Kruk”, was killed during a mortar attack on February 28, 2017 near the village of Luhanske, Donetsk Oblast.
Serhiy was born on March 24, 1993 in the village of Shatsk, Volyn Oblast. He took an active part in Euromaidan, where he suffered multiple contusions. (gah!)
Kremlin-backed militant leader claims ‘right’ to shell his own cities
Alexander Zakharchenko, head of the so-called ‘Donetsk people’s republic’ [DNR], has claimed during an OSCE press conference that he is fully entitled to shell Krasny Liman or Artemovsk, as these are “his land”. This was not the first time that militants have claimed such a ‘right’, both verbally and through their actions, but the statement certainly adds to the multiple reasons why Ukrainians want to see Zakharchenko before the International Criminal Court.

Canada extending military mission in Ukraine to 2019
Canada is officially extending its military training mission in Ukraine until the end of March 2019, Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland and Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan announced Monday in Ottawa.
"The purpose of the UNIFIER operation is to support Ukraine forces by providing military instruction and capacity building in order to maintain the sovereignty of Ukraine," Freeland told reporters.
"Ukraine is a very important partner to Canada and we will continue to support its efforts for democracy and economic growth," she added.
Freeland said that Canada's mission in Ukraine has seen the forces of both countries work together in a professional way that has helped improve their respective militaries.
Sajjan said the focus is on training the Ukraine's forces and that will continue to be the case as the mission moves forward. Specifically, Canadian forces will be helping with small team training, explosive ordnance disposal, military policing, medical training and modernizing Ukraine's logistics system.
"I am proud of the talented and dedicated women and men of the Canadian Armed Forces who contribute to a more stable world, as we demonstrate our reliability as a partner to our allies and our commitment to European security," Sajjan said in a statement issued to reporters.
Asked whether further helping Ukraine would put Canada in Russia's sights, Sajjan said that Russia's actions were what caused Canada to step in and help Ukraine in the first place.

Russia in the Hague accused of terror & discrimination in Crimea & funding terrorism in Donbas
On the first day of hearings into its case against Russia at the International Court of Justice, Ukraine presented a weight of arguments and examples to back its accusations against Russia over its annexation of Crimea and gross violations of human rights under occupation, and for its financing of terrorism in Donbas.
While Russia denies all charges, Ukraine’s case is backed by documents from the UN, OSCE, Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, international human rights organizations, as well as NATO satellite imagery.

During the hearing at the Court on March 6
