Meet senior soldier Olha Benda who lost her leg almost a year ago defending her Homeland from the Russian invaders. A month later, she made her first steps with a prosthetic device. After treatment, she returned to military service demonstrating that a true desire to live wins over everything else.
Olha underwent preparatory military training at the International Peacekeeping and Security Centre in Yavoriv. She was sent to the frontline for the first time in autumn 2016 when several units were redeployed to Avdiivka. The fateful attack took place on May 14, 2017.

When this happened, Olha was dating Oleksiy Benda, a serviceman who operated grenade launchers in the same brigade. They got married…
Today Olha takes her son to kindergarten and goes to work. She was hired by a military enlistment office in Kyiv. She didn’t want to leave the army and thought that this job would be the best solution

Olha claims she regrets nothing. “Would I have gone to serve if I’d known that this would happen to me? Yes, without a doubt! I did lose a leg on the frontline, but I also gained a lot: I met the man I love, a person I can rely on, and I made many faithful friends, my brothers-in-arms. Military brotherhood is something very special, very solid. Such relationships probably don’t exist in peaceful civilian life…”

Denys Nachosny was killed near Pisky, Donetsk Oblast on April 12, 2018. Denys was killed by a sniper bullet while attempting to save a badly wounded comrade.
Denys was born on September 2, 1986 in Markeyev, Kherson Oblast, but lived in Henichesk, Kherson Oblast. He served from 2015 as sergeant, deputy commander in the 34th Battalion “Batkivshchyna” of the 57th Separate Motorized Infantry Brigade. He fought at Rayhorodok, Bakhmut, Pisky, and Avdiyivka.
Denys leaves behind his grieving parents, wife and daughter.

And so it would be a transition mechanism.”

Volodymyr Mayboroda was listed MIA on Easter Sunday (April 8, 2018) near Zaitseve, Donetsk Oblast.
Search parties returned twice to the combat zone, but didn’t find him. On April 15, his body was returned by Russian proxies to the Ukrainian side at Maryinka checkpoint, and ID procedures were conducted. According to the enemy, the body was evacuated from the minefield on April 13.
Volodymyr was born on July 9, 1967 in Melitopol, Zaporizhzhya Oblast. He served as ensign, deputy commander of the reconnaissance unit of the 24th Separate Mechanized Brigade.

Another Hero returns home…
After 1380 days, Dmytro Honcharenko will return home from occupied Donbas to be honoured in his native town.
Dmytro was born on October 14, 1986 in Vasylkiv, Kyiv Oblast, and worked as a volunteer. On July 10, 2014, while delivering aid to Ukrainian troops in the combat zone, Dmytro and three other comrades from Vidsich NGO were surrounded by Russian Kazakhs and Kadyrov’s Chechen fighters near Severodonetsk, Luhansk Oblast. Three managed to escape and hide, but Dmytro was captured by the terrorists.
Dmytro was brutally tortured but didn’t betray his comrades, who were hiding in the occupied city, or any Ukrainian military positions.
He was coldly executed a few days before Ukrainian soldiers liberated the city on July 22, 2014, after an intense firefight with use of automatic weapons, grenade launchers, heavy armoured vehicles and aircraft..
Dmytro will always be 28 years old. He leaves behind two young children.

Maksym Cherkun was killed during shelling near Pisky, Donetsk Oblast on April 16, 2018.
Maksym was born in Kryvbas, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast on January 26, 1997. He joined Pravy Sektor in 2015, when he was only 18, and then served as sergeant in the 34th Battalion “Batkivshchyna” of the 57th Separate Motorized Infantry Brigade and commander of Pisky checkpoint.
His dream was to finish aviation college and fly in the heavens above…
Maksym leaves behind his parents and sister.

42-year-old Vitaliy Makohon died of a stroke on April 16, 2018.
Vitaliy was from Petropavlivsk Borshchahivka, Kyiv Oblast. A war veteran, volunteer, and public activist. He made more than 300 trips to Donetsk and Luhansk regions, over 20 directly to the combat zone.
He leaves behind his parents, wife and two children.
