Woman killed in North York drive-by was on her way home from funeral

It’s been a violent weekend in Toronto and Police Chief Mark Saunders says the drive by murder of a woman in the city's north end early yesterday is a clear cut case of Toronto’s growing “street gang subculture.” 31-year-old Jenas Nyarko became Toronto’s 47th homicide victim of the year -- and fourth within just 24-hours -- as she was sitting in the backseat of a vehicle with three other people who were headed home from a funeral. Police say a silver SUV pulled alongside the vehicle, a shot was fired and Nyarko was killed. She had moved to Canada from Ghana in 2001 and worked at a shelter. So far no arrests have been made.

Marineland theme park founder John Holer dies at 83

ohn Holer, the founder of the Marineland theme park in Niagara Falls, Ont., has died at the age of 83. His lawyer Andrew Burns says Holer died in his home Saturday morning surrounded by family. The tourist attraction Holer founded 1963 has grown into a large amusement park with whales, dolphins, walruses, seals, sea lions and other animals such as deer, bears, birds and fish. Over the years, Holder vigorously defended Marineland against protests and complaints by animal welfare activists who maintain it should be shut down.

We’re into the final matches of round robin play at World Cup 2018 Russia. Four games in total are scheduled today -- two of them at 10am and two at 2pm. The host Russians take on Uruguay this morning. Also at 10am is Egypt and Saudi Arabia, two teams in search of their first wins. This afternoon its Spain against Morocco, while Iran take on Portugal.
