Holodomor remembered with special service from Sask. government

Members of the Saskatchewan government joined the province’s Ukrainian community Tuesday afternoon in a service, remembering the lost lives during the Ukraine famine in 1932-33.

“Eighty-five years ago, millions of Ukrainians lost their lives in a senseless act of brutality,” Minister Responsible for Saskatchewan-Ukraine Relations Greg Ottenbreit said.

“Today we remember the pain and suffering of those lost, many of them children and honour the survivors. Recognizing Holodomor ensures we learn from history so this never happens again.”

A candle was lit at the legislature building and will remain lit for the entire week to show unity with those around the global recognizing the Holodomor genocide.

Saskatchewan’s legislative assembly was the first jurisdiction in North America to recognize this genocide and passed the Ukrainian Famine and Genocide (Holodomor) Memorial Day Act in 2008.

    STATEMENT BY HEATHER NAUERT, SPOKESPERSON

    November 23, 2018
Marking the 85th Anniversary of the Ukrainian Holodomor

This month we join Ukrainians around the world in marking the 85th anniversary of the Holodomor, when millions of innocent Ukrainians were deliberately starved to death by the regime of Josef Stalin.

The Soviet Union’s barbaric seizure of Ukrainian land and crops was undertaken with the deliberate political goal of subjugating the Ukrainian people and nation. This catastrophic man-made famine was one of the most atrocious acts of the twentieth century and a brutal reminder of the crimes of communism.

Today, Ukrainians are once again dying as a result of Russia attempts to destroy the identity and Western aspirations of the people of Ukraine. Russia’s ongoing aggression in eastern Ukraine has resulted in more than 10,000 deaths. However, Russia will not vanquish the resilient Ukrainian spirit, nor dampen Ukrainians’ desire for a better future.

As we remember the Holodomor’s millions of innocent victims, we reaffirm our unwavering support for Ukraine’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the Ukrainian people’s right to chart their own course.

On Tuesday 19 November at 12 noon, over 200 people gathered in the Rotunda of the Saskatchewan Legislative Building to mark the anniversary of the Holodomor, the man-made famine of 1932-1933 during which millions of Ukrainians were deliberately starved to death in a campaign of terror orchestrated by Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin.

In November of each year, people worldwide honour the victims of this crime against humanity and this provincial commemoration was part of International Holodomor Remembrance Week (November 18-24, 2019).

Also in attendance were former Saskatchewan Deputy Premier Ken Krawetz and Mrs Krawetz, Senator Dave Tkachuk and retired Senator Raynell Andreychuk.

UCC Saskatchewan President John Denysek began is remarks by saying, “We have come together in this place of honour to pay our respects to the memory of millions of men, women and children who perished over eight decades ago, not during a war, or for any crimes they committed but simply for being Ukrainian”. He continued, “Because we, as Canadians, aspire to have a just and civil society, it is important that we continue to demonstrate this to the world.”

On behalf of Saskatchewan’s Ukrainian community, UCC Saskatchewan President John Denysek thanked the premier, government of the day and opposition, for its unanimous decision in 2008 to pass Bill 40, recognizing the Holodomor as an act of genocide.

Mr. Denysek concluded with, “May our efforts help to bring peace to the souls of those who lost their lives 86 years ago by ensuring the Holodomor story, a story of great human suffering and injustice is learned and shared and reflected upon to remind us that it should never happen again. Вiчная пам’ять!”A bilingual memorial service then followed led by three Regina clergy.

At the conclusion of the commemoration service, guests made their way to the Holodomor statue, Bitter Memories of Childhood, in Wascana Park to lay wreaths and flowers on behalf of the Government of Saskatchewan, Ukrainian Canadian Congress of Saskatchewan, Ukrainian Canadian Congress – Regina branch and the Regina Catholic School Division Ukrainian Program.
